19 million Nigerians now pay taxes, says Osinbajo (Tribune)

The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday declared open the 2018 edition of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) conference with a revelation that the nation had increased its tax net from 14 million in May 2017 to 19 million this year. Osinbajo, who was the Special Guest of honour at the event, stated that as at Dec. 2017, only 943 Nigerians paid self-assessed taxes of less than N1 million. “Earlier, I noted that as of May 2017, only 14 million economically active Nigerians pay taxes. “I am pleased to note that the number is now in excess of 19 million and still growing. Lawyer accused of killing husband remanded in Kirikiri prison (Punch)

A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday ordered the remand of one Udeme  Odibi, a lawyer, for allegedly stabbing her husband to death. The accused, 48, who was arraigned on a charge of murder, was remanded in Kikiri prison.The News Agency of Nigeria reports that her plea was not taken by the court. Chief Superintendent of Police Effiong Asuquo, the Officer in Charge of Legal Department of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department Panti,  told the court that the accused committed the offence on May 3  at Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, Lekki. Oshiomhole declares for APC chairmanship seat Thursday (SUN)

Immediate past governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole will, on Thursday, formally declare his intention to run for the National Chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the party’s National Convention scheduled for June, this year. The declaration ceremony which will take place, in Abuja, is expected to be attended by APC chieftains, including the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, Senate President Bukola Saraki, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, APC Governors and National Assembly members. Secondus, Ekweremadu laud Ekiti PDP primary (Nation)

The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus says that the successful conduct of hitch free and transparent gubernatorial primaries in Ekiti state on Tuesday is a consequence of the party rebranding and repositioning project that has proved to be on course. Prince Secondus said that the real winner from the exercise is democracy and not any individual as the PDP family in Ekiti would be healthier from the primary. In a congratulatory message he sent to Governor Ayodele Fayose and other leaders and members of PDP in Ekiti state soon after the primary, the National Chairman appreciated them for conducting themselves well. Judge’s absence stalls trial of Alleged Killer of Adeleke (ThisDay)

The arraignment of Alfred Aderibigbe in  an Osun High Court for  the alleged killing of late Senator Isiaka Adeleke  was on Wednesday in Osogbo stalled following the  absence of the presiding judge, Justice Ayo Oyebiyi. The Solicitor General of the state, Mr Dapo Adeniji, however, agreed with Aderibigbe’s counsel, Mr Soji Oyetayo, on June 8 as the new date for  the arraignment of the accused. The Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara-led coroner inquest had recommended Aderibigbe for prosecution having established that he administered the  drug overdose that killed Adeleke. Aderibigbe, said to be a nurse, while testifying before the coroner, said the drugs he gave the late senator were those given to him by the deceased. Read more

NYSC  tasks employers on welfare, security of corps members (Nation)

Mr Remigius Amaefule, the State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Scheme ( NYSC )  in Kwara,  has advised employers to make the  welfare and security of corps members deployed to them their  priority. The coordinator gave the advice on Wednesday at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area, at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Batch ‘A’ orientation course. 6,000 jobs: Police recruitment not for sale, DIG Dikko warns (Nation)

The Deputy Inspector General of Police in-Charge of Logistics and Supply, Maigari Abbati Dikko has warned applicants undergoing recruitment in Kano zone not to indulge in any form of bribery and other nefarious activities. Dikko who spoke in Kano on Wednesday during the inspection, said “ the IGP directed all the DIG’s to move to all the geopolitical zones to supervise the recruitment exercise in other to ensure hitch free one. Group donates relief materials to victims of Benue herdsmen attacks (SUN)

The Tito Group of Company, on Wednesday, donated relief materials worth millions of Naira to victims of Fulani herdsmen attacks in Benue with a call on the federal government to ensure security of lives and property of all Nigerians irrespective of tribal or religious affiliation.Chairman of the company, Chief Isaac Akinkunmi, who led members of staff to donate the materials at Abengana IDPs camp located along Makurdi/Lafia highway, described the  killings of innocent people in the country, and Benue state in particular as unwarranted. Man arraigned over alleged disruption of Ekiti APC governorship primary (Punch)

The police on Wednesday arraigned a 50-year-old man, ‎Ojo Olakunle, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate Court for allegedly disrupting the Ekiti APC governorship primary. Olakunle, whose address was not provided, is facing three counts of destruction of ballot box, interference with the ballot box and acting in disorderly manner. The Police Prosecutor, SP. Femi Falade, told the court that the defendant committed the offences with some other persons still at large on May 5 at Oluyemi Kayode Stadium, in Ado-Ekiti. Read more

Gbekemiye, Marcus win national triathlon (Punch)

The National Triathlon Championships held  at the National Stadium in Lagos with some exciting results. According to the Nigeria Triathlon Union, over 106 athletes from 21 states and seven clubs took part in the championships. Williams Gbekemiye won the men’s elite category after beating Perelate Gbagi and Ibrahim Akinlabi to the second and third place respectively. Rosemary Marcus won  the women’s elite category while Gloria Odiaze and Joy Tonjor  finished second and third respectively. Sadiq Yahaya won the male junior category while Osamuyiwa Uyi finished second.  Yemisi Alabi won the female junior duathlon while Kate Oyewole won silver and Oluwapelumi Adedotun won bronze. The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for  the Asaba 2018 CAA African Senior Athletics Championships Solomon Ogba   says they will aim to set new standards  for the next hosts of the competition. Ebola: 17 people die in DR Congo (Guardian)

Officials said 17 people have died in an area of northwestern Democratic Republic of Congo where health officials have now confirmed an outbreak of Ebola. It is the ninth time Ebola has been recorded in the central African nation, whose eastern Ebola river gave the deadly virus its name when it was discovered there in the 1970s, and comes less than a year after its last outbreak which killed eight people. “Our country is facing another epidemic of the Ebola virus, which constitutes an international public health emergency,” the Health Ministry said in a statement. Thousands mourn Mozambique rebel leader as talks to press on (Abcnews)

Thousands of people on Wednesday attended the funeral of Mozambican rebel and opposition leader Afonso Dhlakama, with the country’s president and Dhlakama’s successor pledging to forge ahead with peace talks. Dhlakama died at age 65 last week in his rural hideout in central Mozambique, where he had run a renewed military campaign against the southern African nation’s government after pulling out of a 1992 peace accord that ended 16 years of civil war that killed up to 1 million people. ISIS claims role in deadly Indonesia prison riot (Cbsnews)

A riot at a police detention center near Indonesia’s capital left five officers and a prisoner dead and another officer held hostage Wednesday. The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) said its fighters were involved but authorities blamed the violence on a food fight. Negotiations were underway for the release of the hostage, said national police spokesman Muhammad Iqbal. The riot erupted in Depok, on Jakarta’s southern outskirts, where four days earlier police arrested three Islamic militants they say planned to attack the headquarters and other police stations in the same town. Google is to ban all adverts related to Ireland’s abortion referendum. The move comes as part of efforts to improve “election integrity” in the run-up to the Eighth Amendment poll. Facebook announced on Tuesday it would block foreign campaign material on its platform after fears were raised over outsider influence. A Google spokeswoman said: “Following our update around election integrity efforts globally, we have decided to pause all ads related to the Irish referendum on the Eighth Amendment.” Read more
