2019 elections: Buhari arrives Bauchi for campaign
President Muhammadu Buhari has arrived Bauchi, the Bauchi State capital on Saturday, for the Northeast All Progressives Congress presidential campaign. The Nigerian AirForce Aircraft conveying the President and his team landed at the Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa International Airport, Bauchi at exactly 12pm. The President, while in Bauchi is expected to commission his campaign office situated close to Awala Hotel. He is also expected to pay a courtesy visit to the Emir of Bauchi at his palace before proceeding to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium venue of the rally.
FG to arraign CJN Onnoghen over Asset Declaration on Monday
The Federal Government will on Monday arraign the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen, at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) over charges bordering on asset declaration. A statement by the Head, Press & Public Relations, Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Ibraheem Al-Hassan, on Saturday, confirmed the scheduled arraignment of the CJN on Monday, January 14, over the alleged charges. Al-Hassan said the arraignment was sequel to an application filed by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to the CCT Chairman on Friday for the trial to commence against the Chief Justice of Nigeria on a six count charge.
APC website publishes plagiarised manifesto
A website belonging to Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress has published a plagiarised manifesto on its website, a check by The Guardian shows. The first paragraph of the power supply section of the party’s Next Level agenda published on apc.com.ng showed remarkable similarities to the content published on several other websites. “Assertively pontificate long-term high-impact testing procedures wiProgressively synergize timely action items and business “outside the box” thinking. Distinctively foster best-of-breed markets before collaborative schemas.
Buhari group asks Atiku to drop presidential bid
The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has urged the presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar to consider throwing in the towel in order to avoid a shattering defeat at the polls on February 16. The Buhari group gave this advice in reaction to the defection of four top notchers of the PDP to All Progressives Congress (APC). Among those listed to have defected to the APC were, former PDP National Chairman AdamuMuazu, former PDP Deputy Chairman Babayo Garba Gamawa and Bauchi State PDP Publicity Secretary, Yayanuwa Zainabari. Describing the situation as “shocking and a big slap to the party ahead of the 2019 polls,” the BMO said the way and manner Atiku Abubakar, as well as his party PDP, is daily losing support from prominent members of the party to the opposition is absolutely unbecoming.
Fayemi seeks OPC, vigilante’s support on crimes
Ekiti State Governor Dr Kayode Fayemi has solicited for support of the Pan-Yoruba group, O’dua People’s Congress(OPC) and vigilante to rid the state of criminal element. He solicited for their support especially in the rampaging kidnappers perpetrating heinous acts in the state. Fayemi said though his government had given marching orders to the Police Commissioner, Mr Asuquo Amba and the Directorate of State Services(DSS) and other security networks to rid the state of criminals. He insisted the backing of other stakeholders in security sector would provide a buffer to the conventional security for the task to be realised.
Obaseki rejects EFF award
Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has rejected an award offered to him by the Edo State Football Federation. Governor Obaseki said he does not receive awards as a Governor and the one to be presented by the football body would not be an exception. Obaseki rejected the award at a party where he feted members of the Bendel Insurance Football Club for qualifying to the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) after 11 years’ relegation. The Edo Governor who urged the team to give account of themselves in the NPFL said the team lived up to the challenge thrown at them at the unveiling of the re-branded club in 2018.
12 seriously injured in Paris explosion, 5 critically, says fire service
Twelve people were seriously injured when a powerful explosion caused by a gas leak tore through a bakery in central Paris on Saturday, including five who are in critical condition, officials said. “Twelve people are seriously injured, including three firefighters, and 24 others have more minor injuries,” Commander Eric Moulin of the Paris fire service told journalists at the scene. “Among the 12, two firefighters and three civilians are in life-threatening condition,” he said.

Andy Murray is set to retire after Wimbledon in the summer but admitted the Australian Open could be his final tournament. In an emotionally-charged press conference ahead of the first Grand Slam event of the year in Melbourne, Murray revealed he was still troubled by the hip injury that has plagued him for the last 18 months. The 31-year-old underwent surgery on the problem a year ago, but he is still unable to play without pain in his troublesome hip, and he is considering going under the knife again to ensure “a better quality of life” once he quits professional tennis.

The England under-19 star has 18 months left on his contract at Stamford Bridge and Sarri has said that remaining at Chelsea is the best place for him.
China’s Huawei fires employee detained in Poland
Huawei said Saturday it has fired a Chinese employee who was arrested in Poland on espionage allegations, as China’s telecom giant distanced itself from the case amid Western concerns that it could act as a proxy for Chinese security services. This week’s detention of Wang Weijing follows the December arrest of Huawei’s chief financial officer in Canada and US efforts to blacklist the company internationally over security concerns.While China’s government has vociferously defended Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou and demanded her release, the firm swiftly sacked Wang, who works at its representative office in Poland.

Pompeo ‘optimistic’ Syria Kurds, Turkey can be protected
Washington’s top diplomat said Saturday he was “optimistic” a way could be found to protect Syrian Kurds while allowing Turks to “defend their country from terrorists” despite a US pullout from Syria. “We are confident we can achieve an outcome that achieves both of those,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told journalists in Abu Dhabi. The Gulf emirate is his latest stop in a regional tour aimed at reassuring allies after a shock December announcement by President Donald Trump that US troops would be withdrawn from Syria.
