The National Assembly has approved the sum of N143 billion as the budget for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against the forthcoming 2019 general elections.
President Muhammadu Buhari in July 17, sent a letter to the Senate requesting the approval of N254 billion for the purpose of the election but was not deliberated due to their annual recess.
However, there exist conflict between INEC’s proposal and President Muhammadu Buhari, as INEC requested for the entire N189 billion while Buhari in the letter requested that the payment be made in instalments.
During the joint sitting of the committees of the Senate and House of Representatives on INEC, the committee went on 30minute executive session to deliberate on the budget.
Meanwhile, INEC in one of the meetings asked that full payment be given to it but approving the budget today, the joint committees decided to go according to Buhari’s request.
Speaking on behalf of the joint committees at the end of the executive session, Senator Suleiman Nazif after 34 indicated the resolution to adopt N143 billion.
He said, “The joint committee sat and has come up with the resolution to adopt the N143 billion presented by Mr. President. It is also the wish of this committee that INEC they present their budget of N143 billion as requested by Mr. President.”
The committees would reconvene tomorrow to receive the commission in order to consider their presentation.
