2019 polls: Police, civil defence demand N317m to feed dogs, horses (Punch)

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps will need N310m to feed and administer drugs to dogs that will be deployed in states for the 2019 elections. The Nigeria Police Force will also require N7m to feed 50 horses that would be used for patrol during the elections which will take place between February 16 and March 2, 2019. The information is contained in the 2018 virement proposal sent to the National Assembly for the 2019 general election by President Muhammadu Buhari. The total police budget for the elections stands at N30.5bn; the Office of the National Security Adviser, N4.2bn; the Department of State Services, N12.2bn; NSCDC, N3.5bn and the Nigeria Immigration Service, N2.6bn. Police deny assassination attempt on Dino Melaye, asks him to report (Vanguard)

The Kogi State Police Command has denied report by Senator Dino Melaye representing Kogi west district at the National Assembly, Thursday, that unknown gunmen in uniform (police,SARS and military) fired gun shots at the vehicle just as its asked the Senator and the people in his convoy to report to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Lokoja. Senator Dino Melaye had tweeted that he thanked God for sparing his life once again as over 20 bullets holes were on his jeep and alleging that a combination of police, SARS and military were the one responsible for the bullets holes. Atiku will defeat Buhari in 2019 —Adamawa PDP (Punch)

The Chairman of the Adamawa State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party, Tahir Shehu, has said if given the party’s mandate, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar will send President Muhammadu Buhari packing from Aso Rock next year. According to Shehu, Atiku remains the only candidate with the requisite resources to confront and defeat the All Progressives Congress candidate in next year’s general elections. Ekiti State Governor-elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi, on Thursday, said he would probe what transpired in the last four years in the state under the outgoing governor, Ayodele Fayose. He said it was in the interest of good governance for him to investigate how much accrued to the state and why salaries were not paid. Fayemi said this in an interview with State House correspondents shortly after he met President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The last has not been heard on the raging media war between Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha and Senator Victor Umeh. Umeh, the erstwhile All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) chairman, had alleged that the Imo governor’s life history is shrouded in abnormality. Governor Okorocha, while responding to Umeh’s recent comment, through his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, had maintained he is an honest man, contrary to Umeh’s claim that he is a fraudster. The statement read: “In the latest attack, he (Umeh) called Governor Okorocha a trickster and, also, threatened to expose him. APC plotting to oust seven PDP govs through rigging –Ishaku (Punch)

Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, on Thursday raised the alarm over alleged plans by the All Progressives Congress to rig the 2019 elections so as to oust him and six other governors of the People’s Democratic Party. Ishaku raised the alarm at the Exco Chamber of the state Government House in Jalingo when he received the former Vice-President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, who was in the state in continuation of his consultations to seek the PDP’s ticket to run for the presidency in the 2019 elections. He said, “I have it on good authority that seven of us have been listed to be ousted through rigging in 2019. Information available to me indicated that those behind the plot have vowed to take power away from seven of us (PDP governors) by all means available to them. Read more

FAAC deadlock: NNPC can’t continue spending public funds without approval – Governors (SUN)

Governors under the auspices of the Nigerian Governors Forum met Wednesday night in Abuja to resolve some of the issues that deadlocked the last Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting in Abuja. During their deliberations the governors insisted that the deadlock will continue until the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) remits what is due the public to government coffers which would be shared equally among the three tiers of government. The NNPC had remitted N147 billion into the Federation Account in May, which the governors faulted and described as a far cry from the expected revenue which does not reflect the current economic realities and prices of oil in the international market. OGTAN appeals to NNPC to spearhead in-country trainings (Guardian)

To boost local capacity building in the oil and gas sector and other technical discipline, the Oil and Gas Trainers Association of Nigeria (OGTAN) has called on the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to champion the cause of retaining local trainings in country instead of imposing on oil companies to train abroad. The President of the association, Dr. Afe Mayowa who said this yesterday in Lagos at the July session of OGTAN Business Forum which was supported by Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and sponsored by Total Exploration and Production Nigeria Ltd, said that they are not against people training overseas to acquire technical knowledge that are not available in country, but what the body frowns at is when oil companies are forced by NNPC to train abroad when capacities are obtainable in country. Siblings steal dead man’s property (Punch)

Two brothers, Ismail Raheem and Ganiu Raheem, have been arrested by the police for allegedly burgling a shop and carting away property worth N2.7m. Punch Metro learnt that the siblings, Ismail, 39;  and Ganiu, 43, on July 3, 2018, broke into a store on Block 1, Alapa Fujah, Surulere, belonging to late Omotunde Alugo. It was gathered that the siblings stole four deep freezers, two fridges, one industrial machine, a TV set, two electric ovens and one sewing machine, valued at N2.7m. Our correspondent learnt that the suspects were caught by some neighbours who saw them moving the items out of the store. Ismail and Ganiu were on Thursday arraigned before a Surulere Magistrates’ Court on three counts of conspiracy, burglary and stealing. Read more

Lagos blames ‘powerful merchants’ for Oshodi-Apapa road gridlock (Guardian)

The massive gridlock on Oshodi-Apapa Expressway has been blamed on the refusal of “powerful merchants” to obey a subsisting order of the Lagos State government restricting the movements of articulated vehicles in the State. The government also attributed the logjam to an ongoing industrial action by a section of workers at the Apapa ports which has slowed down the pace of goods clearance as well as the slow pace of repair works on the roads leading to the ports. “It is indeed pathetic that private firms seeking to make profit from legitimate commerce would continue to subject the citizens of Lagos State to horrendous pains in spite of the provision of holding bays for their trucks and tankers until it is their turn to pick goods at the ports,” Lagos State’s commissioner for information Kehinde Bamigbetan said in a statement on Thursday. Boko Haram hinders demarcation of Nigeria, Cameroon border— UN (Vanguard)

The United Nations, UN, has said the demarcation of the Cameroon-Nigeria border continues to face challenges due to insecurity in areas affected by the presence of Boko Haram. This is contained in a ‘Report of the Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, on the activities of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, UNOWAS’. Guterres also cited the unrest in the English-speaking regions of Cameroon as partly responsible for the challenges faced by Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission. He said: “Insecurity in areas affected by Boko Haram continued to hinder the activities of the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission in the northernmost regions of the land boundary between the two countries. Ex-IGP Ibrahim Coomassie is Dead (ThisDay)

Former Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Ibrahim Coomasie, is dead. He was aged 76. His death was confirmed to Thisday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Jimoh Moshood, who said he died at about 7pm on Thursday at the Orthopaedic Hospital, Katsina. Coomassie, the Sardauna of Katsina, was the 9th Inspector General of Police. He served under the late General Sani Abacha and General Abdulsalami Abubakar administrations. Coomassie was a member of the Provisional Ruling Council (PRC), the highest state organ under the military regime of General Abacha, and was also chairman of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) Read more

Fake visa agent defrauds Facebook friend of N900,000 (Punch)

The police have arrested a fake visa agent, Oladele Oyadokun, for allegedly defrauding his Facebook friend of N900,000. Punch Metro learnt that Oyadokun allegedly collected N600,000 from one Adenike Eniola to boost his business. It was gathered that Eniola and Oyadokun met on Facebook and became friends when he (Oyadokun) portrayed himself as a visa agent and an engineer working with a company in Dubai. Oyadokun reportedly complained to Eniola about having issues with his visa business and needed N600,000 to revive the business. Read more

Car thief nabbed a day after court released him: I needed money to pay my lawyer (Vanguard)

It was double tragedy for a notorious car thief in Ondo State, Yemi Adeoye, arrested by Police detectives as he confessed that he ventured into the illicit trade to offset legal fees of N250,000. Adeoye was released by an Akure Magistrate’s Court on June 15 and the next day returned to the trade by stealing another CRV in Ondo town. Luck, however, ran against him as he was arrested while fiddling with a Toyota Corolla belonging to one Mr. Olanipekun, which his wife took to Shasha Market. The suspect, who specialised in stealing Jeep and Honda cars, was alleged to have single-handedly stolen 32 different brands of Honda CRV cars within the last two years. Read more

Policeman jailed for receiving bribe from robbery suspect (Punch)

A dismissed policeman, Akanmu Kabiru, has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by an Oyo State High Court for receiving bribe from an armed robbery suspect, Badmus Akojode. The court also convicted two other policemen in absentia. The convicted policemen – Tajudeen Olalere and Omotosho Lawrence – have been on the run since they jumped bail. The ex-police officers were arraigned before Justice A. I. Akintola by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on four charges bordering on asking and receiving gratification from a suspect in the course of investigating a robbery case. FC Porto have completed the signing of Super Eagles forward Kelechi Nwakali on a season-long loan deal from Arsenal. Dr Olukoya Youth Football tourney kicks off Friday (Nation)

The annual Dr D K Olukoya International Youth Football Competition kicks off on Friday at the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) University training pitch, Prayer City, along Lagos-Ibadan Express Way. Kazakhstan’s Olympic medal-winning figure skater Denis Ten has been stabbed to death at the age of 25. News agency Kazinform reported Ten – who won bronze at Sochi 2014 – was stabbed in the thigh in Almaty on Thursday after two men tried to steal his car mirrors. Ten, twice a World Championship medallist, was rushed to hospital but died three hours later of his injuries. “Unfortunately, he is not with us anymore,” said a government spokesman. Former Argentina forward, Carlos Tevez, has urged Lionel Messi not to retire from international football, but advises that the country should do more to support their star player in the future. Bayern Munich reach agreement with France World Cup star (Thesportsman)

Bayern Munich have secured the signature of the much-coveted full-back Benjamin Pavard, a breakout star of the French national team’s victorious World Cup campaign. The Stuttgart man has a €35M release clause in his contract with his club that would allow him to move in the summer of 2019. German media outlet SWR have reported that the Bavarian giants, Bayern, have activated that clause. Amnesty International calls on Washington to investigate UAE ‘war crimes’ (Memo)

The United States should investigate the United Arab Emirates’ use of detention and torture, according to Amnesty International. This is because the US supports the UAE’s military campaign in Yemen. Amnesty called on the US Congress to pressure President Donald Trump to condemn the UAE for torture and arbitrary detention. It stressed that if the United States fails to hold the UAE accountable it will encourage further mistreatment of civilians.Amnesty asserted that the UAE arbitrarily detains and tortures Yemeni civilians in a network of secret prisons. President Donald Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to Washington this autumn, the White House said on Thursday, a daring rebuttal to the torrent of criticism in the United States over Trump’s failure to publicly confront Putin at their first summit for Moscow’s meddling in the 2016 election. ‘Star Wars: The Clone Wars’ to return on Disney’s streaming service (Engadget)

The original run of Star Wars: The Clone Wars ended after five seasons and a bundle of “Lost Missions” episodes on Netflix, but now the CGI series is coming back. Today at Comic-Con supervising director Dave Filoni made a surprise announcement that a new 12-episode season will arrive on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, complete with the poster above and a brief trailer. Disney CEO Bob Iger had promised a “few” Star Wars series in development for the new service, and now it’s clear that this is one, joining a live-action show from Jon Favreau. The (still-canon) Clone Wars makes sense, with a fan base already set up and a storyline ready to pick up after its main character has just left the Jedi Order. Read more
