May we never be one, amen – Abiodun Kuforiji Nkwocha

May we never be one, amen – Abiodun Kuforiji Nkwocha

So New Year in a few days folks…

I am going to do you all a favour and strike out one prayer point from your list.

The “Let us all be one and live in peace” thing.

We will never be one, it was not meant to be. We are not all meant to be a bright sunny yellow or a bleak grey. I remember when I finally understood the Tower of Babel story. Stay with me, I no be preacher but point dey.

So the whole world was in one place and they spoke the same language.

They decided to build a Tower so tall that it would reach the heavens.

Tower of Babel

God stopped them simply by giving them different languages. The project failed and they scattered.

I had always thought that the story demonstrated that if we were all one we would be able to touch the heavens. I saw another perspective early this year.

In the beginning God asked man to be fruitful, multiply and dominate the Earth. He had made a beautiful world and there was a lot to see and conquer. But the people didn’t want to see it. They were not adventurous. They wanted to limit themselves to doing the same thing together. But that was not why we were made. We were made to conquer the Earth. Dominate everything and take over. We were made to unravel the mysteries, to explore and see the treasures from top to bottom. We were meant to find the oil and gas fields and harness their energy to light up the world at night, fly to the ends of the earth in minutes and transport day old tomatoes from Jos to Lagos in record time. Exploring would place diamond earrings mined in South Africa in the ears of a Norwegian lady across the world. Exploring meant I, a Yoruba woman, would sit on my dining table enjoying Indian curry and Italian red wine.

Staying in one place, speaking the same language and working on one project was going to limit our seeing and our thinking. Why did we want to go up when we had never looked around?

So, God changed our languages and we scattered. We became different people that looked different, spoke differently and are doing different things in all parts of the world

Different is not bad, different is just that, different.

Must we all like classical music? There is Hip Hop, R&B, Soul, Fuji, Country, Rock, Reggae and so much more and guess what? It finds its audience.

Same with books… different genres, different audiences.

No one is ‘better’ and it shouldn’t be a competition. Unless the parameters are exactly the same, it is not a competition. It is different vehicles on different routes moving at different paces going to different places.

So all this let us be one, sit and sing ‘kumbaya my lord’ will never happen. We will never be one.

The rainbow filter makes me laugh sometimes. I know Facebook’s intention was to show it was an all-inclusive community celebrating gay marriage. Some people use it to signify how broadminded they are but they shut out people they term as narrow minded. But you see, that rainbow has different colours and should include all views.

We will never be in a world where everybody will be ok with the views of everyone else. Someone somewhere is always going to see differently.

That is ok.

The only fight there is, is the fight against people that try to make us the same. That want us to look as dismal and bleak as Kanye West’s models that mirror several shades of beige, grey, black and brown colours. They want us to say the same thing, the same way.

So, that rainbow has gay people in it, it also has Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Agnostics, Atheists, Black people, White people, Hispanics, French, Zulu, Ngas, Yoruba….. people with different cultures and lifestyles.

We will never be one but guess what?

That is ok.

Be conservative, be eclectic, be gentle, be wild, be serious, be a clown…

Be you.

That is ok

Happy New Year folks.
