For today’s Get Familiar series, we introduce Toni Kan, aka, the Mayor of Lagos.
Toni Kan, born Anthony Kan Onwordi is a Nigerian writer, editor and PR guru. Toni was born in Nigeria on June 11, 1971. He studied English literature at the University of Jos, in Plateau State. Later, he earned an M.A in English literature at the University of Lagos in 1999, graduating at the top of his class. He became a magazine editor at the age of 26.
Toni Kan is the author of Nights of a creaking Bed, a collection of short stories that explores themes on sexuality in Africa published by Cassava Republic. In 2009 he won the NDDC/ Ken Saro-Wiwa Prize.
In 2016, Toni Kan released a new book, The Carnivorous City, also published by Cassava Republic. Since its release, the book has been applauded by various writers. While Helon Habila describes the book as “a novel about family and brotherly love, but above all it is a novel about Lagos which brings the city to life like no other book I have read,” Chika Unigwe, NLNG prize winner and MAN Booker prize judge described the novel as “an unforgettable portrait of Lagos laced with mystery and intrigue.”
Toni will be reading from Carnivorous City, with Hawa Golakai on Saturday, in Freedom park, Lagos by 2pm.
At the festival, Toni Kan will be in a panel with kiru Taye, Chinelo Okparanta and Nana Darkoa to discuss Legs Open, Eyes Closed: Sensuality In New African Moderated Sam Umukoro.
