Get Familiar: Meet Ake Festival Guest, Dami Ajayi

Countdown to the 2016 Ake Arts and Book festival, 24 hours to go!.

Dami Ajayi is a writer, poet and doctor. He was born in Lagos where he had his primary and secondary education. He moved to Ile-Ife in Osun state where he studied medicine and surgery at the Obafemi Awolowo University. It was at OAU Ile-Ife Dami began to take his writing serious, although he says he wrote his poem at 11.


Dami Ajayi has written two books- Daybreak and Clinical blues. He won the Dokita Essay competition 2010. He was shortlisted for the 2012 Melita Hume prize. He was longlisted for Erbacce Prize 2012 amongst others, and most recently, shortlisted for the 2015 ANA Prize for Poetry. He is the co-founder of one of Nigeria’s most prestigious literary magazines, Saraba Magazine. Dami’s writing have appeared everywhere from the British Journal of Psychiatry all the way down to the latest anthology by Afridiaspora.

He is currently the Senior Registrar at the Federal Neuropsychiatry Hospital, Lagos

During the festival, Dami will be moderating a book chat with Johwor Ile and Odafe Atogun.
