Hanne Gaby Odiele made the announcement in an interview in a bid to “break the taboo” surrounding intersex people.
Intersex means being born with reproductive organs which do not fit the typical definitions of male and female. Around 1.7 per cent of everyone in the world is intersex, the United Nations says. In Ms Odiele’s case, she was born with undescended testicles due to androgen insensitivity syndrome, which causes girls to have male XY chromosomes.
The 29-year-old fashion model, who was born in Belgium, had the testicles removed when she was 10 amid doctors’ fears they could cause cancer.
