Oscar nomination day has finally arrived, and it‘s full of all the standards and surprises viewers were hoping to see. Meryl Streep picked up a record-breaking 20th Oscar nomination, while Viggo Mortensen surprised with his best-actor nod for Captain Fantastic. Critically acclaimed indie Moonlight picked up eight nominations, while front-runner La La Land earned a historic 14 nods. Speaking of historic nods, people of color broke numerous boundaries this year, for everything from best cinematographer (Bradford Young) to best supporting actor (Dev Patel). Manchester by the Sea became Amazon‘s first movie to land a best-picture nomination (though the film won‘t be available on the streaming service until February 7).
