The Gunners have officially smashed their club transfer record fee as Alexandre Lacazette will cost them £46.5m up front. The previous record was held by the purchase of Mesut Özil in 2013 for £42m. It’s also widely reported that the Frenchman will become the club’s top earner, taking home a wage packet of £150,000-a-week. Lacazette will travel to Australia next week with the Arsenal squad as they begin their pre-season tour.
The former Olympique Lyon striker has made quite a name for himself in recent years, thus attracting admirers from all over Europe. In that time the 26-year old featured in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season awards three times.
Over the past 4 seasons, Alexandre Lacazette has scored more Ligue 1 goals than any other player present. The Frenchman has become somewhat of a cult figure at Lyon, breaking their record for most league goals in a single campaign on two separate occasions (28 & 27).
Despite dominating the French domestic scene, Alexandre Lacazette has been touted as 4th choice striker for the national team. Didier Deschamps has only handed the 26-year old 11 caps for the national team, but as his profile rises in London, his prominence on the international scene will also soar.
Earlier in the window, Lacazette reaffirmed his desire to only join a team in the Champions League. Fast forward a month and the Frenchman is joining a club that finished 5th in the Premier League and will be playing on Thursday nights next season.
