AFCON Qualifier: Stalemate in Johannesburg As Super Eagles Qualify for Showpiece

The Super Eagles took on the Bafana Bafana of South Africa today in their penultimate fixture of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series with the Nigerians needing at least a draw to qualify for the football showpiece after missing the last two editions.

The Eagles had to make do without the duo of Odion Ighalo and Wilfred Ndidi who have been very crucial in the qualifying series; Ighalo scored five goals in two matches against Libya during the last matchday.

The Super Eagles were quick out of the blocks with a goal in the 10th minute via an own goal from Bafana defender, Buhle Mkhwanazi after a dangerous swinging cross from Samuel Kalu.

This setback seems to jerk the South Africans out of their lethargy as they mounted waves and waves of sustained attack on the Nigerian area and it was only a matter of time before the equalizer came through Lebo Mothiba after a wonderful assist from Percy Tau.

The first half ended 1-1 with the game evenly balanced.

The second half started in the similar fashion with the Bafana going for the jugular but the Super Eagles defence was resilient in the hostile Johannesburg atmosphere.

The war of attrition continued in the midfield but both teams had to share the spoils at the end with the game ending in a 1-1 draw.

This result means Nigeria is assured of a place in the biennial showpiece which takes place in Cameroon from 7 Jun 2019 till 30 Jun 2019.
