The wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, Aisha Buhari, has opened a can of worms on the why efforts by her husband to perform creditably in the three years he has been in power.
Mrs. Buhari, known for her bluntness and her fearlessness when it comes to issues bordering on her husband, spoke at a conference organized by Project 4+4 in Abuja, lamenting that two powerful personalities have constituted themselves as a cog in the wheel of speedy development of the country.
Thought the First Lady did not mention the names of the ‘powerful people’, many have insinuated that they could be some very influential Presidential aides who have been the one frustrating the President’s efforts.
The First Lady explained that the government had achieved a lot but could have achieved more or even achieved all it had planned for in one year but for the two people in government who will never allow things to move fast.
She further added that she was disappointed in men who, rather than fight the two powerful men, still go to them in the night to beg for favours.
While giving her speech, Mrs. Buhari noted that the President’s Special Adviser on Politics, Sen. Babafemi Ojudu had tried to stop her by giving her signs not to say what she wanted to say:
“I have realized that Senator Babafemi Ojodu, Special Adviser, Political, to the President, and Dr. Hajo Sani, and wife of the Vice-President, Mrs Osinbajo, are not comfortable with my saying this and want me to confine myself to my prepared speech but we must say the truth.
But I must say what is in my mind.”
This is not the first time the First Lady has carpeted those she believes has been making things difficult for her husband in delivering on the promises he had made to Nigerians.
In October 2016, she had granted an interview to the BBC where she pointed out that her husband was being held hostage by a cabal.
She had said:
“The President does not know 45 out of 50, for example, of the people he appointed and I don’t know them either, despite being his wife of 27 years.
Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position.”
At another time, she had also threatened to abandon her husband in 2019 if things continued the way they were.
“I have decided as his wife, that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again.”
On October 9, 2017, Mrs. Buhari gave a scathing condemnation of the management of Aso Rock Clinic, when she said that the health centre didn’t have the facilities to treat patients with minor ailments.
According to her, she had to visit a private clinic after she found out the Aso Rock Clinic’s X-Ray machine was not working.
