Akwa United wins Federation Cup for first time

Akwa United on Sunday made good their promise to shock Lobi Stars of Makurdi from winning this year’s Fed­eration Cup in their first final winning 2-1 to break a 56-year jinx in their chase for the trophy as Cross River and Akwa Ibom States. Akwa United, who appeared in their first-ever cup final, will represent Ni­geria in next year’s CAF Confederation Cup on account of this historic Cup tri­umph.

The opening goal of the game came courtesy of Nomso Edo who put Akwa United ahead with a well-taken free kick after 36 minutes following an infringe­ment on Friday Ubong who was brought down on top of the Lobi box.

Lobi, Cup winners in 2003, chased the game after the interval, but it was Ab­dulafeez Awakan who doubled Akwa‘s lead in the 70th minute when he pow­ered home a shot beyond the goalkeeper from outside the 18-yard box. Read more
