The Super Falcons of Nigeria on Sunday started their defence of their African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) title on a disappointing note after losing to the Bayana Bayana of South Africa by a lone goal.
The Falcons were very lethargic throughout the match as they laboured to create any chance of sort therefore, it came as no surprise when Thembi Kgatlana of South Africa scored the all-important goal in the 85th minute.
The championship is very important as it determines which country represents the continent at the women’s world cup.
Only the top three finishers in Ghana will fly Africa’s flag in France next year summer.
Nigeria has won the championship for a record eight times and they were hoping to extend their dominance in Ghana after conquering the continent last time out in Cameroon.
