One of the sons of Buchi Emecheta, Sylvester Onwordi, has written a heart moving tribute to his legendary mother who died recently in London.
Sylvester recalled the early years of his mother’s life; how she lost her father who doted on her, and shortly after her grandfather. He also remembered years of watching his mother type on the kitchen table which he said was an activity as normal as her cooking. He talked about the fierce drive of his mother, Buchi Emecheta.
One of her favorite sayings if you believe in yourself strongly enough then you could make any dream come true, became an article of faith with her. His greatest sorrow about his mother’s life was that she did not understand how much she was loved, and loved by her readers. “My deepest sorrow was that Buchi did not understand how much she was loved and appreciated by her readership, not only in continental Africa but all over the world. I also felt that always living a provisional life, based to some extent on survival, she did not really get to enjoy the full fruits of her success.”
