President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday departed Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, for New York, to participate in the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly. Mr Femi Adesina, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity confirmed the departure on his Facebook page, on Sunday, in Abuja. Restructuring: Why Buhari directed agitations to NASS (Guardian)

Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Sen. Ita Enang, said the president directed restructuring agitations to the legislature because of his belief in due process. According to Enang, restructuring is a constitutional matter and the legislature deals with review of the Constitution and should therefore, handle any issue that calls for change of law. Buhari had in his national broadcast on his return from medical leave in London said that the National Assembly and National Council of State were the legitimate and appropriate bodies to handle issues of restructuring. Boroh says 5m have benefited from amnesty programme (Energymix)

Retired Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh, the Coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, says more than five million people in the Niger Delta region have benefited from the initiative since 2009, Vanguard reports. Boroh, who is also the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, disclosed this in Akure shortly after receiving an award as Niger Delta Peace Ambassador from the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ondo State Council. Lagos police arrest 11 secondary school students for cultism (Punch)

The police and some members of the Lagos State  Neighbourhood Safety Corps have arrested 11 secondary school students suspected to be cultists terrorising members of the public with dangerous weapons in the state. The Divisional Police Officer of Olosan Police  Station, CSP Adekunle Omisankin, who confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria  on Sunday, said all the suspects belonged  to the ”Gang Star’’ cult. Omisankin said the suspects claimed to have been in existence since 2013 operating as students, stressing that they were between 17 years and 18 years old. Read more

The Nigerian Navy has expressed its readiness to confront and security challenge that might come its way. Flag Officer Commanding, Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Victor Adedipe, stated this after the command’s third quarter route march in Calabar, Cross River State. Kaduna APC to reconcile aggrieved members (SUN)

Some stakeholders in the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State have resolved to pursue genuine reconciliation with aggrieved members of the party ahead of the 2019 general elections. The stakeholders comprising legislators, political appointees, and party officials made the declaration in a communiqué issued Sunday following their meeting in Kaduna. They agreed to reconcile with those who “have shown deep commitment to the progress and stability of the party in the state’’, but stressed that party supremacy is non-negotiable. The stakeholders, who endorsed the candidature of President Muhammadu Buhari and Gov. Nasiru El-Rufa’i in 2019, said all members must subject themselves to the constitution and articles of the APC. 4 women ‘sprayed with acid by stranger’ at Marseilles train station (Independent)

Four holidaymakers have allegedly been sprayed with acid outside a train station in southern France. The American women were outside Saint-Charles station in Marseilles when they were reportedly targeted by a stranger.  The group had been planning to travel to Paris and were waiting to board a train when they were attacked. Two of the victims, aged 20 and 21, were taken to hospital, according to local media. The other two women were said to be suffering from shock. Read morel

Iran claims it has developed ‘the father of all bombs’ (Independent)

Iran has manufactured a 10-ton bomb comparable in scale to the United States’ “Mother of All Bombs”, one the country’s most senior general’s has claimed.  “These bombs are at our disposal, can be launched from aircraft and they are highly destructive,” said General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, Airspace Commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.  Speaking to the country’s state news agency FARS, Mr Hajizadeh described the bomb as “the father of all bombs” inviting comparison with the Massive Ordnance Air Blast Bomb (MOAB) which the US Air Force dropped on tunnels in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province from an MC-130 aircraft in April. Tropical storm Maria to bring even more damage to Caribbean (NBC)

Tropical Storm Maria was expected to reach hurricane status on Sunday, and hurricane watches were in effect for several Caribbean islands, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. Some of the islands were devastated by Hurricane Irma earlier this month. Maria was about 410 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles islands with maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour at 8 a.m. EST, the NHC said. “Strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours,” the forecaster said. Hurricane conditions are possible by Monday night or Tuesday in Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy and Anguilla, according to the NHC. Blood and embalming fluid seeps onto street outside Baton Rouge funeral home (Independent)

Blood and embalming fluid leaked from a storage tank onto the street outside a funeral home before it was spotted by passersby. Images showed the mix of blood and formaldehyde as it seeped onto the street behind the Greenoaks Funeral Home in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  A blockage in the storage tank had caused the leak, which lasted around 20 minutes.  City officials told WBRZ the blood did not make its way into the sewer and was a private property issue.
