Buhari Okays new appointments (Nation)

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved new appointments and renewed some existing appointments of executive officers of some Federal agencies. This was contained in a statement issued by Olusegun A. Adekunle, Permanent Secretary (General Services Office) in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. The new appointments, he said, are two new Chief Executive Officers of Federal Agencies and one Senior Special Assistant. Dr. Ali Adamu was appointed as Provost for Federal College of Education (Technical), Gombe, Gombe State for Initial period of four (4) years with effect from 25th May, 2018. Read more

A presidential aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Mr Donald Duke, on Tuesday, said that his ambition was not backed by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. Duke, a former governor of Cross River, who recently declared his intention to run for the exalted office, told newsmen in Lagos that though he remained close to Obasanjo, his decision to run was personal. “I am not hypocritical. I am close the former president but he is neither my sponsor nor backup. However, those who come up with these propaganda also go to get the ex-president’s endorsement. “I will not keep people aside because of what others think. Chairman of Board of Trustees, BoT, of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Senator Walid Jibrin, has said the party would not accept any proposal from any political group for the change of its slogan and symbol, the umbrella. In a statement issued in Kaduna, yesterday, Senator Jibrin said the BoT of the party will stand resolutely against the persecution of its members, including former governor in the name of fighting corruption. Eid-el-Fitr: Marketers assure Nigerians of steady supply of petroleum products (Vanguard)

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has expressed its commitment to steady supply of petroleum products in all parts of the Southwest during the Eid-el-Fitr holiday. Alhaji Debo Ahmed, the Chairman, Western Zone of IPMAN gave the assurance in an interview in Lagos on Tuesday. Ahmed said the association was prepared to deploy all available resources to ensure that Nigerians enjoy a smooth festive season devoid of fuel scarcity. He, however, urged the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to ensure availability of petroleum products at all government depots within the Western region for effective loading. Read more

Benue loses N400b to herdsmen attacks – Gov. Ortom (SUN)

The Benue State Government says it has lost over N400 billion worth of property to renewed militia herdsmen attacks on communities in the state between 2015 and now. Governor Samuel Ortom who disclosed this while briefing newsmen on the achievements and challenges of his administration in the past three years, at Government House, in Makurdi said the estimate was arrived at following preliminary report of assessment of damages caused by the crisis. He lamented that the continued herdsmen attacks on the state had caused untold hardship on every resident of the state either directly or indirectly stating further that the loss was much and difficult to recover from. Presidential panel recovers $7m ‘stashed’ in Heritage Bank, others (Nation)

The Special Presidential Investigation Panel (SPIP) for the Recovery of Public Property has recovered seven dollars million (N2.1 billion at official rate) illegally kept in Heritage Bank. Chairman of the panel, Mr Okoi Obono-Obla, disclosed this while briefing President Muhammadu Buhari on activities of the panel. Spokesperson of the SPIP, Lucie-Ann Laha, made this known in a statement on Tuesday. Laha quoted Obono-Obla as telling the president that the panel had also recovered N533 million and land worth N1.5 billion, all from the “previous management” of NEXIM Bank. He said the recovered funds and property had since been returned to the bank. Read more

Imo LG election: APC alerts members on sale of fake nomination forms (SUN)

The acting Chairman of the Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Chris Oguoma, has raised the alarm over sales of fake nomination forms for the forthcoming LG election in the state. Oguoma cautioned the aspirants of the party contesting for various positions in the July 14 Local Government election not to purchase nomination forms from unauthorized persons except at the ones sold at the party secretariat. He said that the the party discovered that some unauthorized persons have been selling fake nomination forms to unsuspecting members of the public, disguising as APC Executive members. Read more

APC Chairmanship aspirant withdraws from Race (ThisDay)

Barely 10 days to the National Convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), one of the chairmanship aspirants, Chief Ibrahim Emokpaire, has withdrawn from the race and directed his supporters to vote for former governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomohle. Emokpaire who apparently was among those aspirants Oshiomole described as feather weight, said he took the decision after due consultations with members of his family, political associates, leaders of the party and admirers. Addressing a press conference Tuesday in Abuja, the Edo-born politician said that as a loyal party member, he decided to withraw his nomination “in order to unite our party and join forces with our amiable leader, Comrade Adams Oshiomohle, to move our party forward.” Read more

Taxify wants young Nigerians to get their PVC (Guardian)

As part of effort celebrating democracy in Nigeria, ride-hailing app, Taxify has called on young Nigerians to as a matter of urgency get their permanent voters card (PVC) ahead of next year’s election. Taxify stressed that the journey to a better Nigeria is in the hands of those who have their PVCs. Court halts trial of Peace Corps boss, Akoh (SUN)

The Abuja division of the Federal High Court yesterday halted the trial of the National Commandant of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, Ambassador Dickson Akoh in the 13 count alleged criminal charges brought against him by the Nigerian police. Justice john Tsoho stopped the trial in protest of the persistent refusal of police to open the Corporate Head office of the Corps sealed up since February 28, 2017 during its official commissioning in Abuja. Delivering ruling in the motion on notice brought against police by Akoh, the court held that police as an institution established by law must not be seen breaking laws and disregarding court orders and judgments with impunity. Ikoyi, environs to experience power interruption — EKEDC (Vanguard)

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Tuesday announced that there would be power interruption four hours daily in Ikoyi and other adjoining areas in Lagos Island for the next one week. Mr Godwin Idemudia, the General Manager, Corporate Communications of EKEDEC made this known in a statement in Lagos. According to Idemudia, the week-long power interruption is to enable the company carry out service improvement rehabilitation work on Shaw Road 11KV Feeder covering Ikoyi and environs. Police Recruitment: 6,491 successful candidates begin training (ThisDay)

Police have commenced training of 6,491 successful candidates, which is above the 6000 new recruits approved by President Muhammadu Buhari. The Head of Press and Public Relations, Police Service Commission (PSC), Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, who disclosed this in a statement Tuesday, said the newly recruited police constables were expected at their different training colleges nationwide by Wednesday, June 13, 2018 for the commencement of training. Ani said the PSC had on Thursday, June 7, uploaded the list of 6,491 successful candidates on its recruitment portal, psc.org.ng with specific instructions on how, when and where to report for training. He said the training colleges were opened to admit the new recruits from Friday, June 8, 2018 and will last till Wednesday June 13, 2018. Read more

Lagos Police uncovers illegal Blood Bank, recovers 7 pints (ThisDay)

The Commissioner of Police Lagos State, Imohimi Edgal, has arrested 45 years Achegbulu Paul for operating an illegal blood bank in his one room with children as donors, recovered seven pints of blood. According to police report, Achegbulu was arrested  after he drew four pints of blood from 17 years old Ayomide Adesanya on Monday June 4 and Sunday June 10. He took two pints each on the two days. The medical lab technician of 18 Kusa bus stop Bariga was said to have lured under aged kids. He paid them 2,000 naira each while he sold for 7,000. According to the PPRO Lagos, SP Chike Oti, the CP led operatives of the Command to the Bariga to see the blood bank and paid a visit to the victim at the hospital after the case got to the Command. Atletico Madrid have reached a “preliminary agreement” to sign Monaco winger Thomas Lemar. The France international – who has spent three seasons with Monaco since arriving from Caen – is in Russia for the World Cup. Arsenal failed to sign Lemar, 22, in last summer’s transfer window, while he was also a £60m target for Liverpool. “Over the next days, both clubs will work to close the agreement for the definitive transfer,” Atletico said. Chelsea confirm they have agreed a deal with Hyundai to become their new official global automotive partner. A US Congress candidate has pepper sprayed himself to demonstrate how teachers could protect against school shootings if they had “non-lethal defence tools in every classroom”. Levi Tillemann, a Democrat candidate in Colorado, says there needs to be legislation to protect children in schools. “I am calling on congress to pass legislation to place secure a can of high-power pepper spray inside a ‘break glass in case of emergency’ box in every classroom in the country and train teachers how to use this powerful self-defence tool,” he said. “These boxes should be wired into the school’s fire alarms, to help ensure that they are only used in true emergencies.” Read more

‘Revenge’ plan man jailed for 20 years after targeting judge and police officer (Belfasttelegraph)

A man who targeted police officers and a judge after becoming obsessed with “limitless revenge” against authority figures has been jailed for 20 years. West Yorkshire Police said Ashkan Ebrahimi, 33, conducted extensive research on 38 different individuals as he amassed chemicals and weapons including swords, crossbows and air rifles. Senior officers said they “strongly believe that he would have eventually executed his plans in harming a police officer on the streets of West Yorkshire”. The force confirmed that Ebrahimi, of Oak Lane, Halifax, was sentenced on Tuesday after being found guilty of possessing explosives with intent to endanger life, possession on an offensive weapon, possession of a bladed article in a public place and stalking offences.
