Buhari treks 800 metres back home after Eid el-Kabir prayer (Vanguard)

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday joined thousands of Muslim faithful to observe the two raka’at Eid el-Kabir prayer in Daura, Katsina State. Reports have it that the president arrived the Eid Praying Ground in company of his aides and relatives at about 9.48 a.m. Buhari performed the annual sacrifice of slaughtering a ram immediately after the prayer session. He trekked for over 800 metres from the prayer ground to his private residence amidst chanting of `Sai Baba’ by well- wishers. Earlier in his sermon, the Chief Imam of Daura, Safiyanu Dansanwai, who led the prayer, stressed the need for peace. Read more

Esan youths attack Obaseki convoy (Nation)

Some youths of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo Central senatorial district under the auspices of Esan Youth Movement have attacked the convoy of Governor Godwin Obaseki. The youths pelted the convoy with sachet water because of Governor Obaseki insistence that he was in the area to meet with party leaders and not the youths. Governor Obaseki was at Irrua, headquarters of Esan Central to meet with Edo Central party leaders as part of his consultations ahead of the party primaries. Some party sources said Governor Obaseki is rooting for consensus candidates to emerge while others are insisting on direct primaries. Read more

Eid-el-Kabir: Buhari, Masari call for Sober Reflection (ThisDay)

President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Aminu Bello Masari of Katsina State have urged Muslims to use this year’s Eid-el Kabir for sober reflection and be good ambassadors of their religion by upholding high moral values. Buhari, in his Sallah message in Daura, his hometown, reminded Muslims that the occasion of Eid-Arafat was a remembrance of the submission of Prophet Ibrahim to his creator (Allah) by which he hoped that the world would value sacrifice in relationship with one another. ASUU resists ‘commercialization’of education over LAUTECH crisis (Nation)

The Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU ), Calabar Zone, has described the abdication of the responsibility of funding the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho by the co-owners, Oyo and Osun States, as an introduction to the commercialization of education, which should be resisted. Addressing reporters in Calabar, Cross River State, on Tuesday, the Zonal Coordinator, Dr Aniekan Brown, said the ramifications of commercializing education “are very negative both in the short and long terms.” Reading from a statement signed by himself and chairpersons of ASUU of the universities within the zone, he said, “It is regrettable that that institution has become an uncanny and typical metaphor of the neglect of public education in our country Nigeria. Due process followed in Music House partial demolition, Oyo govt insists  (Nation)

The Oyo State government yesterday insisted that it followed due process in the partial demolition of Music House, the building housing popular musician Yinka Ayefele’s Fresh FM in Ibadan, the state capital. The government said no court order restrained it from carrying out its statutory role in public interest. It said the Music House building contravened the planning laws of the state, adding that the radio station’s management was duly informed about this through several correspondences. The government said its action to demolish the building was neither politically motivated, nor was it an act of vendetta against the radio station, as it continued transmission, despite the partial demolition. Reacting to a recent statement by the Benue State Government where Tsav was referred to as an agent of Miyetti Allah, a national coordinator of MACBAN, Alhaji Garus Gololo, urged Governor Samuel Ortom to concentrate on governing the state and leave MACBAN alone. Mob beats woman, burns her home then parades her naked through streets in India (Independent)

A woman has been stripped naked, dragged from her home and paraded through the streets in the latest incident of mob violence in India. The woman had been suspected of involvement in a murder, after a 19-year-old man was found dead on railway tracks in the small town of Bihiyar, in eastern Bihar state. Colorado man ‘killed wife after seeing her strangle daughter on baby monitor’ (Skynews)

The father of two girls whose bodies were found submerged in oil told police he killed his wife after seeing her strangling one of their children on a baby monitor. Christopher Watts – accused of murdering both daughters and his wife – claimed in an interview that his pregnant partner had killed the children after learning that he wanted a divorce. Investigators later discovered Watts was “actively involved in an affair with a co-worker,” which he had denied during an earlier interview. Watts told police that after discussing the separation with his wife, he walked downstairs before returning to his bedroom to witness Shanann Watts, 34, killing three-year-old Celeste on the baby monitor.
