Buhari visits The Netherlands (Nation)

President Muhammadu Buhari will on Sunday, July 15, 2018, depart for the Netherlands to participate in activities to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), at The Hague. A statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, said that President Buhari is the only world leader invited to deliver a keynote address during the Solemn Hearing to commemorate the anniversary at Courtroom 1 of the ICC’s Headquarters at The Hague. In buttressing Nigeria’s commitment as a member of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the ICC, the President, as the current anti-corruption champion for the African Union, will use the global platform to reaffirm Nigeria’s support to the fundamental values of the Rome Statute and to the ideals of the ICC. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday met with the National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and counselled them on steps to adopt if they hoped to unhorse President Muhammadu Buhari and his All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019. Obasanjo who was elected Nigerian President twice from 1999 – 2007  on the platform of PDP,  told the  21 man delegation of the Committee led by PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Walid Jibrin to pay more than passive attention to four issues, he identified, as needed ingredients to bring PDP back to power. Ekiti guber: DSS arrests PDP candidate’s running mate, Ogunsakin, lawmaker, Fayose’s aide, 50 others (SUN)

Just few hours to the Saturday, July 14 governorship poll in Ekiti State, arrests of top members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and top government functionaries  of the state government were allegedly made by the Department of State Services (DSS). Deputy governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ayodeji Ogunsakin, and Chairman, House Committee on Information, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Samuel Omotosho, were among about 50 others in PDP stalwarts arrested on Saturday that were allegedly arrested on Friday night by operatives of DSS. Ogunsakin, who spoke to the reporter on the phone on Saturday night, said that some of the PDP chieftains and Governor Fayose’s aides arrested were picked up with their wives and children. Read more

Election Process Smooth, Says Fayemi (ThisDay)

All Progressives Congress candidate in the Ekiti governorship election, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, said the Saturday’s election process had been “seamless, so far.” The APC candidate said this shortly after he voted at his polling unit in Isan Ekiti.  Fayemi who arrived his Polling Unit 009 in Isan Ekiti at 10.20am accompanied by his wife and members of his household, promptly took his place on the queue, but one of the Presiding Officers approached and offered him the opportunity to cast his vote immediately. However, Fayemi weighed the option for a while and consulted with his wife. Thereafter, he asked the voters, if they would permit him to vote ahead of them. Read more

The People’s Democratic Party has apologised to former President Olusegun Obasanjo for ‘‘bad conduct and mistreatment,’’ Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo’s Media Aide, has said. Akinyemi made the disclosure in a statement issued on Saturday in Abeokuta and made available to newsmen. He said the party’s National Chairman, Uche Secondus, who led a 21-member delegation of the party’s National Working Committee on a courtesy call on Obasanjo, gave the apology. Read more

Fayose accuses Security Agencies of Bias (ThisDay)

Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Saturday accused the security agencies of compromising the governorship election. Addressing newsmen shortly after casting his vote at exactly 1:20pm, at his Unit 001, Afao Ekiti, his country home, the governor alleged that policemen aided and abetted open distribution of money and ballot snatching. He praised Ekiti voters for turning out massively and for conducting themselves peacefully. Fayose alleged that policemen were reported to be supervising ballot snatching as well as providing cover for those engaged in the distribution of money on the election day. According to him, all attempts to personally report the alleged incidents to police high authorities were rebuffed. Read more

It’s not fair to Fulani if herdsmen are declared terrorists – Miyetti Allah (SUN)

The Fulani herdsmen are not terrorists and should not be declared as such. Some people are camouflaging the Fulani to commit atrocities. Security personnel have arrested people in Fulani attire committing havoc. This happened in Taraba and other states, where security men arrested people putting on Fulani outfits to attack communities, but people would attribute them to Fulani. There are some nomads, who are very good and concentrating on what they are doing, and they are not committing any offence. Those who are clamouring for the declaration of Fulani herdsmen as terrorists are not fair; the herdsmen are not terrorists. Not all the herdsmen are committing atrocities, in every tribe or organisation, there are bad eggs and there are good people. Read more

12 feared dead in Ogun flood as victims count losses (Nation)

More than twelve people are reportedly dead following a ravaging flood that hit Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital and its environs after a torrential rain on Friday. Of those feared dead, three of them (Mrs Alirah Akintobi, Shuaib and Abideen, comprising mother and her two sons) have been confirmed dead at Ilawo area of Abeokuta. The kiosk where Mrs Akintobi runs her petty store was swept away on Friday evening by the flood,  but while trying to escape with her children, she fell and got drowned along with the two boys in the flood that reached lintel level of houses in some affected areas. Novak Djokovic reached his fifth Wimbledon final on Saturday with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (11/9), 3-6, 10-8 victory over Rafael Nadal in the second longest semi-final ever played at the tournament. Djokovic, the 2011, 2014 and 2015 champion, will face Kevin Anderson, the first South African in the final in 97 years, for the title after a 5-hour 15-minute marathon.Victory on Sunday for the 31-year-old Serb would take his career Slam tally to 13, four behind Nadal but still seven back from Roger Federer. It was a second day of epic drama at the All England Club after Anderson had needed 6 hours and 36 minutes to beat John Isner on Friday.That set the record for the longest semi-final at the tournament and became the second longest Grand Slam singles match ever played. Germany’s Angelique Kerber shattered Serena Williams’s dreams of an eighth Wimbledon title and record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles trophy with a 6-3, 6-3 win in the final on Saturday. It was Kerber’s third title at the majors to add to her Australian Open and US Open triumphs in 2016. Williams, 36, had been attempting to win a first Grand Slam since giving birth to her daughter Olympia in September. Kerber is the first German woman to win the Wimbledon title since Steffi Graf in 1996. After a controversially delayed start she defended her baseline brilliantly to extract 24 unforced errors from an often wayward Williams and clinch her third Grand Slam title. Read more

Belgium finished as bronze medalist at the 2018 FIFA World Cup on Saturday. They defeated England 2-0 in the third place match played at Saint Petersburg Stadium at the front of a 64, 406 spectators. Belgium side began on a serious minded note as Meunier opens the scoring as early as the 4th minute. They sealed the third place spot with a second goal at 82nd minute by Hazard as they trailed tackles with England national team. Hazard and Belgium too good for England in World Cup play (Vanguard)

Belgium achieved their best World Cup finish as goals from Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard secured a 2-0 victory over England in Saturday’s third-place playoff in Saint Petersburg. Meunier, who missed the semi-final loss to France due to suspension, scored after just four minutes before Hazard grabbed a late second as Belgium eclipsed the side that came fourth at the 1986 edition. Belgium have now defeated England twice in a fortnight, having waited 82 years to beat them before winning 1-0 in their group stage encounter. Putin hosts Abbas in Moscow, days after Netanyahu visit (Guardian)

Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas was in Moscow on Saturday to meet Vladimir Putin, just days after the Russian leader hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “I’m glad of the opportunity to tell you about the contact we have had with your neighbours, and leaders of various countries,” Putin told him as they met at the Kremlin, in quotes carried by Russian agencies. “I know that the situation in the region is difficult and we are grateful that you have used the World Cup as a reason to come to Moscow,” Putin said, adding that he was glad of the opportunity to discuss the problems facing the Palestinians.
