The Presidency on Monday said the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, would still remain the running mate of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, disclosed this in an interview with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The presidential spokesman said the victories recorded by the ruling All Progressives Congress in legislative elections held in three states over the weekend were indications that victory is certain for the Buhari/Osinbajo presidential ticket in 2019. NASS siege: protesters in Lagos defy rain to demand probe (Vanguard)

Hundreds of protesters led by the Campaign for Democracy and the coalition of civil society groups today trooped out to protest what they call an affront on the institution of democracy in Nigeria through last Tuesday’s siege on the  National Assembly by men of the Department of State Services (DSS). The protesters chanting SOLIDARITY and pro democracy songs marched through the Obafemi Awolowo Way Ikeja under heavy downpour,  to the Lagos state house of assembly. Speaking through their leaders, Comrade Olufemi Lawson of the Campaign for Democracy and Omotaje Saint Jericho, the protesters described the seige on the National Assembly by men of the department of state security service as an attack  on democracy and an attempt to force a civilian “coup” on the country and abort the peaceful Democratic institutions in the country. The victory of the All Progressives Congress in last weekend’s bye-elections signal victory for President Muhammdu Buhari come 2019, according to a House of Representatives aspirant, Abu Najakku. INEC to reposition polling booths to check vote buying, says REC (Guardian)

Polling booths are henceforth to be position in a way to make it difficult for people to see how voters cast their votes during elections, a Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) announced in Awka on Monday. Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, the REC in charge of Anambra, who made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said that the measure was to make it impossible for anyone to know who a voter voted for. The measure comes against the backdrop of massive vote-buying reported in recent elections in the country, including the governorship election in Ekiti, which analysts said, was characterised by vote-buying. 102 Women die at childbirth daily – Akeredolu (Nation)

Wife of the Ondo State Governor, Mrs Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu on Monday said no fewer than 102 women die daily during childbirth. Besides, she noted that 2,123 children could not be alive to celebrate their 5th birthday because of premature death. Mrs Akeredolu hinged the challenges on low literacy level of most Women, stressing that half of Nigeria’s women population were illiterates. Akpabio couldn’t complete Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road in 8 Years, says State Govt (ThisDay)

The Akwa Ibom State Government has said that the federal road linking Ikot Ekpene with Uyo, the State capital, was abandoned by the immediate past government of Senator Godswill Akpabio because of inability to address litigations that characterised the job. In a media interaction weekend in Uyo, the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Charles Udoh, disclosed that former Governor Akpabio, inaugurated the road when works were at 42 per cent completion. The former Senate Minority Leader, Senator Akpabio, had listed the road passing through his senatorial district as one of the projects he started which has been abandoned or yet to be fully completed. Ishaku urges Muslim pilgrims to pray for Nigeria (Nation)

Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, on Monday urged intending Muslim pilgrims to pray for peace to reign in Nigeria when they are in Saudi Arabia to perform this year’s Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam. Ishaku spoke at the Model Primary School Jalingo, while biding farewell to some 300 intending Muslim pilgrims from Taraba State. At least, 746 Muslim pilgrims will perform the Hajj in Saudi Arabia this year. Out of the 746 pilgrims, 296 are sponsored by Taraba, making Taraba State to be ranked among the first three highest sponsors of Muslims to Mecca this year, a repeat of last year’s feat. Read more

Ambode advocates improved welfare for NYSC members in Lagos State (Vanguard)

Gov. Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State has urged employers of the NYSC members to improve on their welfare and create conducive environment for them during the service. Ambode made the call on Monday in Lagos, during the official closing ceremony of the orientation course for the 2018 batch “B” of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The governor, represented by Mr Oluseye Oladejo, the state Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, advised the corps members to be law abiding at all times. “I urge all corps employers in the state to put in place improved welfare package and conducive environment that will further motivate them to give their best for the benefit of all. Umahi doles out N4000m to NYSC (Nation)

Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi on Monday doled out N400m for to the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC in Ebonyi State for the renovation of the scheme’s Orientation camp in Afikpko North Local Government Area. This is separate from the N5000 travel allowance he directed to be immediately given to each of the 2200 Batch B stream 1 Corps members who ended their orientation course today. The governor also gave the corps members who took part in the parade another N2million. NURTW tasks FRSC on issuance of driver’s licence (Guardian)

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Jigawa, on Monday, called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to be stricter in vetting driver’ licence before issuance to applicants. Alhaji Sabo Innani, the NURTW chairman, Hadejia chapter in the state, made this call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Hadejia. He said that subjecting the applicants to more rigorous trainings in the rudiments of driving would minimise reckless driving, which usually caused accidents. “To become a good driver, you need to know the theoretical aspect of driving, even before the practical aspect of it. FG to concession 6 hydro dams (Nation)

The Federal Government on Monday proposed to concession six hydro dams to private operators, who are expected to build, operate and transfer them. The Minister of Power Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola broke the news at the 29th Power Sector Stakeholders’ meeting in Minna. He noted that it was part of the government plans to energize education institutions and markets. Police intensify raids on Rigasa forest after 4 officers die (Punch)

The Nigeria Police Force has intensified raids and assaults on bandits in the Rigasa Forrest in Kaduna State. The News Agency of Nigeria reported that four policemen were on Saturday, killed by bandits in the Rigasa forest in Kaduna state. The police said the victims are : Insp. Bernard Odibo, Insp.Mamman Abubakar, Insp.Haruna Ibrahim and Sgt Emmanuel Istifanus. Model George Koh guilty of killing rival after Instagram row (Guardian)

A model has been convicted of stabbing a rival to death after a row on Instagram over a woman. George Koh, 24, has been found guilty at the Old Bailey of murdering Harry Uzoka. In the tape played on US TV channel NBC, a voice presumed to be Mr Trump’s expresses surprise at Omarosa Manigault Newman being fired the previous day. “Nobody even told me about it,” the male voice can be heard saying. She also released what is said to be a secretly recorded tape of White House chief of staff John Kelly firing her.
