After a goalless match, the hosts of the tournament won during the penalty shootout. The Chilean national football team won Saturday its first ever Copa America tournament, which they hosted this year. After a heated match, Chile won against Argentina during penalty shootout, scoring 4 goals against 1, with Argentina’s Ever Banega and Gonzalo Higuain both failing to score. The first half of the game saw opportunities for both teams, the clearest being a header by Manchester City (England) striker Kun Aguero, who tried a header stopped by Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.
Soon after, Chile doubled its offensive efforts with little success. A controversial play would take place on the 40th minute, when Chilean defender Gary Medel kicked Argentine star Lionel Messi in the stomach. Medel was only shown a yellow card for the foul.
Despite leading in the offensive for the first 15 minutes of the second half, Chile would have to beef its defense after a series of counter-attacks by Argentina.
