Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Trevor Noah, Lupita Nyong’o and Yaya Toure are nominated for Personality of the Year in the newly introduced lifestyle award categories for the 2014 MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs).
The organisers also said that in the Transform Today by Absolut category, Clarence Peters, Leti Arts, Rasty and Anisa Mpungwe are nominees, while the MTV Base Leadership award and Best International are still to be revealed.
Nigerian sensation Davido and South African Afro-pop duo Mafikizolo, all of them multiple nominees at the awards, will be the first to perform at the ceremony to take place in the City of Durban. They are both tied with Uhuru as the most nominated artistes in this year’s edition, with four nominations each, and going directly head-to-head in Song of the Year, Artiste of the Year and Best Collaboration. Additionally, Davido is nominated for Best Male, while Mafikozolo leads the contenders in Best Group.
The 2014 awards will feature performances from African and international artistes, including the award’s signature collaborations between artistes of different genres and cultures – a high point of every show.
Other nominees from across Africa include: 2Face, Burna Boy, Chidinma, Clarence Peters, Danny K, Davido, Diamond, Don Jazzy, Dr. Sid, Efya, Fally Ipupa, Flavour, Fuse ODG, Ice Prince, KCEE, Mafikizolo, Olamide and P Square. Others are: Professor, Phyno, R2bees, Sarkodie, Tiwa Savage, Uhuru, Wizkid, Zakes Bantwini among many other local and international acts.
With hundreds of thousands of votes already cast, public voting for the 2014 MAMA continues online until midnight on June 4. The winners of the MTV Base Leadership Award and Best Video are chosen exclusively by MTV Base.
The award takes place at the ICC, Durban, South Africa on Saturday, June 7 and viewers can catch it live across Africa.
