Nigerian convicted for forged passport goes missing in India

Nigerian national John Ashanti alias Akeem Lanare Shonubare (43), convicted of cheating by a city court a year ago, has disappeared leaving the Pune police and the Government Railway Police (GRP) groping in the dark.

The Foreigners’ Registration Office (FRO), Pune, has issued a lookout notice for Ashanti who underwent rigorous imprisonment for four years for possessing a forged passport during his visit to Pune in 2011.A visa, 18 bundles of US dollars and other articles were recovered from his possession.

He was sentenced to four years’ RI after being found guilty, under relevant sections of cheating under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Indian Passport and Foreigners Act.

Ashanti was released from Yerawada Central Prison last year after which he was under observation by the GRP at its police station. Read more
