Leading man of Selma, one of the most relevant films of 2014, David Oyelowo, has been bypassed for an Oscar nomination in the Best Actor category despite being a favourite for the award.
Selma, a civil rights biopic, was directed by Ava DuVernay and depicts Dr. Martin Luther King leading an activist movement in the hostile racial climate of Selma, Alabama, which helped spur the eventual passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. David Oyelowo gave a commanding performance as Dr. King.
The actor already has several nominations and awards for his role including a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) from the Golden Globes.
Selma was however nominated in two categories for the Oscars: Best Picture and Music (Original Song).
