The impending defection of Senator Godswill Akpabio from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has been generating serious infighting between the parties.
To this end, the PDP has accused the APC of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to force the Akwa Ibom State Senator and some of its key members to defect to the ruling party.
A source close to the PDP said the new plot by the APC is to intimidate some of the lawmakers with EFCC charges to get them to sign on for APC and to help it retain the majority in both chambers of the National Assembly.
The PDP source further stated that the party is mobilizing action against the APC tactics, adding that apart from Akpabio, no other opposition lawmaker will likely succumb to such intimidation.
“There were interventions by the party at all levels to find out what the issues are with Akpabio but he didn’t state his reasons.
We know he has a case with the EFCC and perhaps that is what is driving him. For now, it appeared he has made up his mind to go,” PDP source said.
The source added that the leadership of the PDP has several options to stop its members from facing such intimidations, including taking legal actions to declare their seats vacant since there is no faction in the party.
Another source, however, hinted that a Senate President position promised by the APC may have swayed Akpabio to defect to the ruling party as he has been ‘told that the seat will soon be vacant after Bukola Saraki is forced to resign.’
Another close source says that Akpabio has been in neck-deep negotiations with the APC leadership since the defection of Saraki to the PDP with the hope of becoming the Senate President once the seat is declared vacant.
It was also gathered that during the negotiations, Akpabio had asked for the position of the Senate President and also that he should be made the APC leader in his state and the party’s political structure handed over to him.
