The All Progressives Congress has said senators will determine whether or not Saraki will retain his position as Senate President. The party said it remained the party of choice for all genuine democrats as such it would do nothing to undermine a system its members fought so hard to nurture to this level. The National Vice Chairman of the APC (South South), Hilliard Eta, said this in response to allegations by the People’s Democratic Party that it was planning to force a change of leadership in the Senate. MSME to get N10m collateral-free loans–Osinbajo (Guardian)

Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, says the Federal Government is working towards providing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises(MSME) a credit facility of N2 million to N10 million without collateral. Osibanjo made the disclosure on Wednesday at a dinner/ maiden edition of the MSMEs Award 2018 held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja. The awards packaged by the Office of the Vice-President and supported by the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investment, got over 300 nominations across the nation. Osinbajo had in 2017 launched the MSME Clinic as part of efforts to encourage the contributions of MSMEs to Nigeria’s economic growth. The acting president said he was delighted to reward and recognise outstanding MSME as they represent remarkable examples of Nigerian entrepreneurship, creativity and innovation. Read more

Makarfi: Stop victimisation in Benue (Nation)

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential aspirant and former governor of Kaduna State Senator Ahmed Makarfi has objected to what he described as the victimisation of defectors to the party in Benue State. He said those victimising Governor Samuel Ortom and his supporters are trying to truncate democracy, adding that the governor’s defection was in accordance with freedom of association  guaranteed by the constitution. Makarfi said in a statement by his media aide, Mukhtar Sirajo, that two-third of the 30-member House of Assembly was denied access into the chamber while seven lawmakers were given police protection to plot the impeachment of the governor. Shehu Sani’s suspension splits Kaduna APC (Guardian)

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kaduna State is sharply divided over the suspension order on Senator Shehu Sani representing Kaduna Central. Members of Sani’s Tudun-Wada constituency had issued him a suspension order despite the olive branch extended to him by President Muhammadu Buhari and other APC leaders for him not to defect from the party. Sani had threatened to leave the party with other aggrieved members before the intervention of Buhari and some APC stalwarts. Read more

The deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, said on Friday that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission agreed to delay his interrogation that began on Tuesday after he told investigators he was “not feeling well.” Mr Ekweremadu was questioned by anti-graft detectives on allegations of conspiracy, illicit asset purchases and money laundering from Tuesday morning until late evening.He was released on administrative bail and scheduled to return on Wednesday morning for continuous interrogation, Premium Times reported based on details of his appearance provided by EFCC sources. Alleged Fraud: Kalu appeals ruling on No-case Submission (ThisDay)

A former Governor of Abia State, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, has filed an appeal challenging the ruling of the Federal High Court in which last Tuesday which said he had a case to answer on the allegation of fraud preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Justice Mohammed Idris had last Tuesday held that Kalu has some explanations to make particularly on certain documents tendered by the EFCC as exhibits in evidence against him. The judge said: “I am of the view that the defendants have some explanations to make in the light of the exhibits and the evidence so far led. Again, I will say no more. The no-case submission is dismissed.” Read more

World Bank to provide support for Nigeria’s economic growth (SUN)

The World Bank has indicated that it is willing to provide technical support to Nigeria in critical areas to facilitate the country’s economic growth and development. The Bank’s Vice President for African Region, Mr. Hafez Ghanem, who gave the indication in Abuja during a discussion with the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma, said the World Bank accords Nigeria top priority in its considerations. Mr Ghanem further said the Bank will be willing to provide technical support for Nigeria in the areas of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) Mid-term Review, Power Sector Reform, Public Private Partnerships (PPPs), as well as population management. South-South NCP rejects meeting over alleged alliance with PDP (Guardian)

The South-South Zone, National Conscience Party (NCP), has rejected the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting billed to start on Friday in Abuja. Pastor Peters Omoragbon, National Deputy Chairman, NCP, South-South, made the position known in a statement in Lagos. Omoragbon said that the rejection was due alleged unapproved NCP alliance with PDP.He said that the rejection decision was taken by the party’s leaders in zone during a meeting in Port Harcourt. According to Omoragbon, the NCP National Chairman, Dr Tanko Yunusa, should withdraw the party from the alleged alliance before such a meeting. Read more

Imo CP withdraws security details from Imo Deputy Governor (ThisDay)

Despite the court order restraining parties from further action in the impending impeachment of the Imo State Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, the State Commissioner of Police, Dasuki Galandachi has withdrawn all the security details attached to him. The State Governor, Rochas Okorocha had on Tuesday directed all the relevant bodies involved in the impeachment of the deputy governor to respect the state high court order. This also affected the swearing-in of his nominee for the replacement of the deputy governor as the ceremony was aborted in obedience to the court order. Read more

Federal High Court, Awka threatened by erosion (Punch)

The Federal High Court, Awka is under serious gully erosion threat and at the verge of imminent collapse, the News Agency of Nigeria reports. A Correspondent of NAN who visited the complex on Friday reports that parts of the property had already caved into the gaping gully. Some of the parts that have been lost to erosion include the perimeter fence, generator house, the original site for electricity and tarred road leading to Judges’ Quarters. Attacks on IDPs, Gov: Plateau residents unite against hoodlums (SUN)

It was another sad moment for traumatised and agonised women, children and old people at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp, Anguldi, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, when hoodlums broke into the camp, unleashed terror and looted donated food items. This was after the convoy of Governor Simon Lalong was attacked by the same hoodlums shortly after exiting the IDPs camp. Corps member dies in Abuja crash, friend blames police (Punch)

A 22-year-old member of the National Youth Service Corps, Tony Zitta, has been killed in an auto accident. Punch Metro learnt that Zitta had gone to drop off a friend after an event on July 29 and was on his way back when his car was bashed by another vehicle at the Diamond Bank Junction on Ademola Adetokunbo Way, Wuse II, Abuja. It was gathered that the driver, who was allegedly speeding, rammed into Zitta’s car from the passenger’s side, leaving the victim unconscious. Our correspondent learnt that some policemen, who were the first responders at the scene, allegedly tried to steal some of Zitta’s belongings but were prevented by sympathisers. Read more

Ahmed Musa joins Saudi club Al Nassr FC (Guardian)

Super Eagles striker, Ahmed Musa has completed a transfer from Leicester City to Saudi Arabia club, Al Nassr. The Saudi club announced the signing of the World Cup star on a four-year deal believed to be worth £17.5 million. The deal reportedly makes him the highest paid Nigerian football player. Musa joined Leicester City in 2016 as a record signing for £16.6 million but failed to have an impact at the King Power. According to him, “the NRFF after due consultations have appointed South Africa’s Bronson Weir as the new coach of the Stallions. Carney: No-deal Brexit risk ‘uncomfortably high’ (BBC)

The possibility of a no-deal Brexit is “uncomfortably high” and “highly undesirable”, Bank of England governor Mark Carney has told the BBC. Mr Carney said the prospect of the UK leaving the EU without a deal was “a relatively unlikely possibility, but it is a possibility”. He said it was “absolutely in the interest” of the EU and UK to have a transition period. However, the financial system was robust and could withstand shocks. “We have made sure that banks have the capital, the liquidity that they need and we have the contingency plans in place, ” he told the BBC’s Today programme. “There is a very broad range of potential outcomes to these Brexit negotiations and we are entering a crucial phase.” Read more
