Hayfever sufferer’s partial to a G&T on a balmy summer’s evening (or on a chilly, rainy April one, we don’t judge) will be relieved to hear that clear spirits should be your tipple if choice if you don’t want your sniffly symptoms getting worse. Millions of people in the UK struggle with sneezing, watering eyes and an itchy throat when the pollen count rises in the spring and summer, with the period between mid-May and June known as ‘hayfever season’. But if you’re feeling under the weather, there’s no need to miss out on that beer garden afternoon. Though Asthma UK notes that 75 per cent of hayfever sufferers and 64 per cent of asthma sufferers find their allergies worsen after drinking alcohol, this is due to the sulphites and histamine found in dark-coloured, fermented drinks like red wine, beer and cider.
