The Federal Executive Council (FEC) rose from its weekly meeting in Abuja wednesday with a resolution mandating the Ministry of Health to beef up surveillance and screening of passengers at the nation’s land borders and airports with a view to averting another outbreak of Ebola into the country. Briefing newsmen at the end of the meeting presided over by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, said blood samples taken from five patients in DR Congo confirmed that two of the five patients examined had been infected with Ebola.  “Of course, of great concern to the Federal Exceutive Council is the outbreak of Ebola in DR Congo. As you might be aware, over the last one month, DRC recorded 19 suspected cases of viral hemorrhagic fever and lost 16 of the cases. Read more

Saraki, Dogara for Oshiomhole’s APC chairmanship bid declaration (Guardian)

Former Governor of Edo, Adams Oshiomhole, on Wednesday announced that he would declare his bid for the national chairmanship of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja on Thursday. He told newsmen in Benin that President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki and House of Representatives Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara, would join top members of the party at the occasion. The Nigeria Police have said the April 18 invasion of the Senate was made possible by internal conspiracy between some security agencies and some lawmakers. The Divisional Police Officer in the National Assembly, Mr. Sulu-Gambari Abdul, said this Wednesday in his submission before the joint Senate and House of Representatives committee investigating the invasion. During the invasion of the Senate Chamber by the hoodlums, the mace was stolen but was later recovered under a bridge in Abuja. PDP demands Sen. Jang’s release from EFCC custody (Nation)

The Plateau Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has called for the “immediate release” of former Plateau governor Jonah Jang from Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) custody. Jang, who represents Plateau North in the senate, was invited by the EFCC on Monday over alleged misappropriation of some monies when he governed the north-central state between 2007 and 2015. The senator had, since then, been in the custody of the anti-graft agency. SERAP challenges Fashola to give account on spending in power sector (Vanguard)

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has urged the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN, to disclose the spending on the privatisation of the electricity sector and the exact amount of post-privatisation spendings to date. In a Freedom of Information request sent to the minister, SERAP, was asking him to also explain if such spendings came from budgetary allocations or other sources. The organisation is also seeking “information on the status of implementation of the 25-year national energy development plan, and whether the Code of Ethics of the privatisation process which bars staff of the Bureau of Public Enterprises, BPE and members of the National Council on Privatisation, NCP from buying shares in companies being privatised, were deliberately flouted.” Read more

NYSC: 1,596 reject serving in Adamawa (Vanguard)

About 1,596 corps members of the 2,126 posted to Adamawa State under the 2018 batch “A” for the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) scheme have rejected their postings to the state. The Coordinator of the NYSC in the state, Mallam Abubakar Mohammed made the disclosure in an interview with in Yola on Wednesday. The coordinator said that those that rejected their postings had sought redeployment to other states based on insecurity, marriage and health grounds. Mohammed said that only 530 corps members of the 2,126 posted to the state decided to serve in the state. He said that due to security challenges, the 530 that concluded the orientation on Wednesday were not posted to serve in Michika, Madagali, Mubi North and Mubi South Local Government Areas.
