Enugu approves 13th month salary for workers (Sun)

Enugu State Executive Council (EXCO), yesterday approved 13th month salary for civil servants in the state as a boost to celebrate the forthcoming Christmas. The gesture was in keeping with the commitment of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s administration to the welfare of workers. The approval was the outcome of the meeting between the leadership of the organised labour in the state and the council, held at the Government House, Enugu.  Reacting to the development, the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Virginus Nwobodo, said the gesture was unprecedented in the history of the state. Budget boycott: 3 Imo Assembly members resign (Sun)

Majority leader of the Imo State House of Assembly, Lugard Osuji, his deputy, Kennedy Ibe and the Chief Whip, Marcel Odunze, were alleged to have been asked to resign their positions by the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.  It was gathered that the resignation was connected to alleged roles in the botched 2018 proposed budget presentation by Governor Rochas Okorocha which was shunned by the legislators for alleged withholding of their constituency and other allowances by the state governor. Atiku urges other defectors to return (Nation)

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar yesterday called on other politicians that dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to return to the PDP. Atiku was received at the party’s Abuja secretariat by the chairman of the Caretaker Committee Senator Ahmed Makarfi.  The former Vice President said it is only by their returning to the PDP that he and other defectors could build a stronger and more united PDP that can regain power in 2019. A former national publicity cecretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh, has insisted he will not testify or call any other witness in his trial until former President Goodluck Jonathan, whom he has asked the court to issue a summons, testifies as his witness. He told Justice Okon Abang, of the Federal High Court, that whatever further steps he would take in the defence of his case,  will largely depend on what Jonathan would tell the court, in respect of the case.  His position was conveyed to the court through his counsel,  Mr. Emeka Etiaba (SAN), and the counsel representing his company — Destra Investments Limited — Mr. Tochukwu Onwugbufor (SAN). Court unfrezees Patience Jonathan’s 16 accounts (Nation)

Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja has lifted an order made on May 30, freezing 16 bank accounts linked to wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience.  Justice Nyako in a ruling yesterday ordered the lifting of the freezing order that barred Mrs. Jonathan and 10 organizations linked to her from accessing the accounts containing aggregate sums of $5.8million and N3.5billion.  Yesterday’s ruling was on an application that Mrs. Jonathan and the 10 companies filed to challenge an ex-parte interim freezing order earlier obtained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). PDP: Its unending zoning controversy (Sun)

Ahead of the December 9 national convention of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), tension is mounting in the opposition party. Party chieftains across the country are threatening fire and brimstone over the micro-zoning of party offices by the various chapters of the PDP across the six geo-political zones in the country, and the refusal of the party leadership to micro-zone the national chairmanship of the opposition party. Court orders temporary forfeiture of ‘Diezani’s $4.760m property’ (Nation)

The Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday ordered the temporary forfeiture of two penthouses valued at $4.760 million, which allegedly belong to former Petroleum Resources Minister Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.  The properties are: Penthouse 21, Building 5, Block C, 11th floor (Bella Vista Estate) Banana Island, Ikoyi, and Penthouse 22, Block B (Admiralty Estate) also in Ikoyi, Lagos. Justice Mojisola Olatoregun ordered that they be forfeited to the Federal Government. She ruled on an ex-parte application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Read more

W’Bank gives Nigeria N107.4bn loan for rural electrification (Punch)

The World Bank on Tuesday announced the provision of a $350m loan (N107.4bn at the official exchange rate of N307 to a dollar) for the development of rural electrification projects in Nigeria. It also announced Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency as the implementing organisation of the Federal Government that would be in charge of the loan. The bank stated that 80 million people in Nigeria were without access to electricity, while about 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa did not have power supply in their various communities. Osun begins distribution of Opon-Imo in public schools (Nation)

The Osun State government has begun the distribution of e-learning computer tablets for the 2017/2018 academic session to final year pupils in the state’s public schools.  The distribution of the tablets started at an informal ceremony at Osogbo Government High School in Osogbo, the state capital. The pupils and teachers were excited to receive the device again. Thirty thousand units of the tablets will be given to final year pupils ahead of writing their Senior Secondary School Examinations (SSCE), the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) examinations. Lagos, 9mobile to teach 1m Nigerians to code by 2019 (Sun)

Telecom company, 9mobile, in partnership with the Lagos State Government, plans to teach at least one million Lagos residents how to code by 2019. In line with the vision of the Code Lagos initiative, a coding centre has been launched in one of the company’s adopted schools, Rabiatu Thompson Primary School, Surulere, Lagos. Fed Govt inaugurates committee for Ekwueme’s burial (Nation)

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, yesterday inaugurated a committee to oversee the burial of former Vice-President Alex Ekwueme.  Ekwueme died in the United Kingdom (UK) on November 19.  He was 85. Mustapha eulogised the late Dr Ekwueme’s personality, who he said served his fatherland meritoriously. Gunmen kidnap AEDC official, demand N10m ransom (Punch)

Some unidentified gunmen have reportedly abducted an official of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, Mr. Adamu Usman, in the Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.  Findings by Northern City News revealed that the incident occurred at about 5.30pm on Sunday  along Akgwanga-Keffi Abuja Road. It was gathered that the kidnappers had contacted the victim’s family and  demanded N10m ransom.  A source told our correspondent on Tuesday that the AEDC worker was returning from an official assignment in Keffi when he was abducted alongside other victims and taken into the surrounding bush. Soyinka flays reports of son’s wedding in U.S. (Nation)

Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka yesterday condemned what he described as fictional accounts of his son’s recent wedding in the United States.  He spoke at the presentation of his new book, “Green Card, Green Gods”, at the Freedom Park, Lagos. The literary giant described as mischievously false reports in a section of the media that he had disapproved of his son, Oretunlewa, marrying an Igbo woman, Nneka Ekechukwu, on the basis of wide age disparity between the couple and had to be persuaded by family members to attend the nuptials in Atlanta. Osinbajo visits Numan over farmers, herders violence (Sun)

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has visited Numan, Adamawa State, to condole with the people, over the recent spate of violence which had led to several deaths in the area. Attacks by opposing sides in the area have led to dozens of deaths in the last two weeks. On Monday, fresh fight erupted in a predominantly Bachama Community, in what locals said was a reprisal by their Fulani neighbours whose relatives had earlier been killed. Residents said homes were set ablaze as locals were killed, while  dozens fled into the bush. After arriving Yola Airport, where he was received by Governor Jibrilla Bindow, Osinbajo proceeded to the palace of the Lamido of Adamawa, Barkindo Mustapha. Read more

Suspected herdsmen destroy journalist’s cassava farm in Abia (Punch)

A cassava farm belonging to Mr. Steven Oko, have been destroyed by cows belonging to suspected herdsmen at Olokoro, in the Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State. Oko, a journalist based in Umuahia, reports for   The Authority Newspapers. Narrating his ordeal on Monday, Oko, who put the worth of his farm at over N463,000, said he was devastated by the incident.  The journalist, who said he had planned to embark on some capital project with proceeds from the sale of the crops by next year, said his hope had been dashed by the invasion of the farm by cows. Nasarawa: Al-Makura bans night grazing (Sun)

Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Almakura, has banned night grazing of livestock in the state. The governor vowed that his administration will not rest on its oars until herdsmen/farmers conflict and other criminalities are eradicated in the state. Governor Almakura, who stated this yesterday in Keffi, during a security meeting with stakeholders in the western senatorial zone of the state, explained that the ban came as a result of series of complaints by farmers in the state that herdsmen have been taking their cattle to graze on farmlands of their unsuspecting victims at night, thereby, destroying all crops planted. Kidney failure: Patient’s mother greedy, took N3.9m, says NGO (Punch)

The owner of a non-governmental organisation, Dignity for the Helpless Foundation (DHF), Pastor Samuel Brown, has said the mother of Tochi, a kidney failure patient, Ndidi Mbonu, is using her to make money. Brown, in a 12-page document, explained that his organisation had already given the family about N3.9m as against the N1.4m Ndidi said she collected. He said the NGO later realised that the family, while getting money from the group, was also raising money through some other platforms. Read more

Katsina govt, MTN fight cattle rustling with animal identification technology (Sun)

There was excitement recently in Katsina State when MTN Nigeria and Katsina State government partnered to fight cattle rustling using advanced technology. The duo officially launched the Animal Identification Management Solution (AIMS) at the Runka Game Reserve, which many believed to be the first of its kind in the country. It was gathered that the launch followed extensive consultation and live demonstrations conducted with leaders and members of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN) in the key northern states of Kano, Katsina and Kaduna. Trump to recognize Jerusalem as Israel capital (Reuters)

President Donald Trump on Wednesday will recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and set in motion the relocation of the U.S. Embassy to the ancient city, senior U.S. officials said, a decision that upends decades of U.S. policy and risks fueling violence in the Middle East. Facing an outcry of opposition from Arab capitals, Trump, in a landmark speech, will announce he has ordered the State Department to begin developing a plan to move the embassy from Tel Aviv in what is expected to be a process that takes three to four years, the officials said. Russia banned from Pyeongchang Winter Olympics (Reuters)

Russia has been banned from the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics after the IOC found evidence of an “unprecedented systematic manipulation” of the anti-doping system that has led to a series of suspensions for the country’s athletes in recent months.  The International Olympic Committee (IOC) did not impose a blanket ban on Russia ahead of the Rio 2016 Summer Games but said on Tuesday that the evidence unearthed by the Schmid Commission made the doping situation impossible to dispute. Trump lawyer denies Deutsche Bank got subpoena on Trump accounts (Reuters)

A U.S. federal investigator probing alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election asked Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) for data on accounts held by President Donald Trump and his family, a person close to the matter said on Tuesday, but Trump’s lawyer denied any such subpoena had been issued. Germany’s largest bank received a subpoena from Special Counsel Robert Mueller several weeks ago to provide information on certain money and credit transactions, the person said, without giving details, adding that key documents had been handed over in the meantime.
