SGF’s alleged fraud: You lied, Senators tell Buhari

Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, has dismissed as “false” President Muhammadu Buhari’s claims on a Senate report indicting the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for corruption.

Speaking at the Senate, on Tuesday, after Senate President Bukola Saraki read the President’s  letter absolving Mr. Lawal of fraud, Mr. Sani suggested the president’s defense smacked of double standards. Read more

Lagos records 115 tanker accidents in 2016 – Official

The Lagos State Fire Service recorded 115 petroleum tanker accidents in 2016, Nwanovim George, the former Chief Fire Officer in the state has disclosed.

Mr. George made the disclosure on Tuesday in Lagos at the ongoing national training for tanker drivers organised by Petroleum Tanker Drivers, PTD, branch of NUPENG. Read more

Why Senate should confirm Magu’s nomination – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said the need to sustain the current anti-graft war informed his decision to re-nominate the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, for consideration and confirmation by the Senate.

President Buhari noted that in undertaking the anti-graft campaign, his administration has been guided by the need for urgency, consolidation and improvement of the statutory framework for addressing the scourge of corruption in the country. Read more

Troops kill notorious militants in Bayelsa

Two suspected notorious militants have been killed in the creeks of Bayelsa State by the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe (ODS).

They were reportedly shot dead when the troops raided and destroyed their camp at Obama flow station in Nembe local government area of the state. A statement issued by the Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre (JMCC), Lt. Col. Olaolu Daudu, said troops of Sector 2 carried out the raid following a tip-off by locals. Read more

Five days after former President, Yahya Jammeh quit power, there is no government in The Gambia.

The Economic Community of West African State (ECOWAS) said on Tuesday the newly inaugurated President Adama Barrow was still in Senegal. ECOWAS Commission president, Mr. Marcel Alain de Souza, said the regional body was doing everything possible to ensure that President Barrow goes back to his country to start work in the shortest period. FG set to build two new hydro power stations

The Federal Government has concluded plans to boost electricity generation in the country with two small hydro power plants capable of adding 2,000 kilowatts of electricity to the country’s energy capacity, The Punch reports.

Three die in Onitsha multiple road crash – FRSC

Three persons, a female and two males, on Tuesday lost their lives in a multiple accident involving an articulated vehicle and nine others along the Upper Iweka road, Onitsha in Anambra.

Mr Sunday Ajayi, the state Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), while confirming the incident, said nine casualties were taken to three hospitals. Read more

Israel approves plans for 2,500 new settlement homes in West Bank

Israel has announced plans to build 2,500 more homes in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said they had responded “to housing needs”.

Palestinian officials said the plans were a fresh blow to attempts to bring peace to the region. It is the second such announcement by the Israeli authorities since US President Donald Trump took office. Read more

Hanne Gaby Odiele made the announcement in an interview in a bid to “break the taboo” surrounding intersex people.

Intersex means being born with reproductive organs which do not fit the typical definitions of male and female. Around 1.7 per cent of everyone in the world is intersex, the United Nations says. Six killed as helicopter crashes in central Italy close to avalanche site

Six people have been killed after a helicopter crashed near a ski resort in an area of central Italy still reeling from an avalanche that engulfed a hotel last week.
