FG investigates killing of Illorin inmates

The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau , has taken over investigation into the death of six inmates killed last Thursday in the Oke-Kura Prison, Ilorin, Kwara State.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Prisons Service, Francis Enobore, told PUNCH Metro on Wednesday that the investigation would unravelled what truly transpired on the day of the incident.

This is just as the Public Relations Officer of the Kwara State Command of the NPS, Mr. Philip Adegbulugbe, said the deceased inmates died of “tear gas attack” after they demanded improvement in their food quality and living condition.

Our correspondent had exclusively reported that the inmates were beaten to death by the warders after a protest against low quality of food.

A source had said 11 other inmates were seriously injured and were admitted at a hospital. He had also claimed that there had been attempts to cover up the case. Adegbulugbe had initially denied the incident when contacted on Friday, asking our correspondent to visit the prison and “see things for yourself.” He had said no riot or protest occurred and nobody was killed.
