FG to Take over Expansion of Lagos-Badagry Road

The federal government is set to take over the reconstruction and expansion of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, the Minister of Works, Mr. Mike Onolememen, said yesterday.

Onolememen said this in Lagos during a slide presentation of work on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway by Julius Berger Plc. Read more

Soldiers On Death Row Moved To Kainji, Lagos

The 12 soldiers condemned to death by a military court-martial have been moved to military facilities in Kainji in Niger State and Lagos.

A reliable source said that the soldiers had been moved to an underground cell at the military intelligence Headquarters in Apapa, Lagos State. Read more

Education ministry, unity schools shut over unpaid allowances

Government activities at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Education were paralyzed on Monday by the indefinite strike declared by the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria over unpaid allowances estimated at N1.8 billion.

The 104 Federal Government Colleges, otherwise called Unity Schools, have also been shut nationwide by the aggrieved staff union.  Read more

Stakeholders call on FG to end insurgency

Stakeholders at the peace Ambassadors Foundation and the Youth Federation for World Peace have called on the Federal government to develop political will in tackling the insecurity bedeviling Nigeria.

The stakeholders in an 11-point communiqué issued at the end of a one-day workshop to mark World Peace Day held at the NLC secretariat Maiduguri, also called on the Federal Government to set a panel of inquiry to investigate and prosecute the alleged sponsors of Boko Haram Insurgency in the North, as nobody is above the law. Heritage Bank affirms 20% payment for Enterprise Bank

Heritage Bank Limited has affirmed the payment of 20 per cent initial deposit of the N56 billion it bidded for the acquisition of Enterprise Bank Limited, beating the September 23 deadline.

According to the bank, the next hurdle, which it expressed confidence of scaling, would be the remaining 80 per cent, totaling over N44 billion, slated for October 13. Read more

Banks refund over N17b to customers

The authorities of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN have asked customers to remain enlightened over their rights as bank customers and should channel their complaints appropriately.

As at August 2014, the CBN has been able to get banks to refund over N17 billion to customers for either wrongful or excess charge. Read more

Russia Seeking Alternatives to Boost Oil and Gas Production

EIA data shows that Russia was the world’s largest producer of crude oil (including lease condensate) and the world’s second-largest producer of dry natural gas in 2013. In 2013, production of crude oil and lease condensate grew by 1.3%, and production of dry natural gas grew by 2.1%.

Most of Russia’s crude oil and natural gas production occurs in West Siberia, a part of central Russia that stretches from the northern border of Kazakhstan to the Arctic Ocean. Read more

2 Suspects in Deaths of Israeli Teens Killed, Israel Says

An Israeli army spokesman says two Palestinians suspected in the fatal abduction of three Israeli teens in June have been killed in a shootout with Israeli forces. Lt. Col. Peter Lerner says the suspects were killed in the West Bank on Tuesday.

The teens’ abduction in the West Bank sparked a massive manhunt, leading to the arrest of hundreds of activists of the Islamic militant group Hamas and eventually sparking the summer war in Gaza. The bodies of the three Israelis were found three weeks later and a suspected mastermind was arrested. But the two main suspects believed to have abducted and killed the teens had remained fugitives. Lerner says the two, Marwan Qawasmeh and Amer Abu Aisheh, were killed in the shootout. Hamas had claimed responsibility for the abduction. Read more

IS-linked group threatens to kill French hostage in Algeria

An Algerian group linked to Islamic State jihadists threatened to kill a French hostage within 24 hours unless Paris halts air strikes on the IS in Iraq, in a video posted yesterday.

Jund al-Khilifa (Soldiers of the Caliphate), which has pledged allegiance to IS, said in the video that it carried out Sunday’s kidnapping of the Frenchman in a mountainous region of eastern Algeria where al-Qaeda is active. Read more

Arab Bank found liable over Hamas attacks

A US jury on Monday found Arab Bank Plc liable for providing material support to Hamas, and said it must compensate victims of two dozen attacks the Islamic militant group was suspected of carrying out in Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Jurors needed less than two days of deliberations to reach their verdict after a six-week trial in Brooklyn federal court that lawyers described as the first terrorism financing civil case to reach trial in the United States. Read more

Air strikes in Syria kill, wound tens of Islamic State fighters-monitor

Tens of Islamic State fighters were killed or wounded in air strikes on the Syrian city of Raqqa and surrounding areas, a group that tracks the war said on Tuesday.

“There are tens of wounded and dead,” Rami Abdulrahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told Reuters by phone. The Observatory gathers information from a network of activists on the ground. Read more

Cameron to urge Iran to help tackle Islamic State

Prime Minister David Cameron is to meet the president of Iran to urge him to join an international effort to tackle the Islamic State terror group and drop his country’s support for the Assad regime in Syria.

The meeting with Hassan Rouhani, at a crucial United Nations summit in New York, will be the first time a British prime minister has held face-to-face bilateral talks with an Iranian president since the country’s Islamic revolution in 1979. Read more

NERC to develop business continuity regulations for electricity market

Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) said it has set up a committee to work with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to develop business continuity regulations that would protect the electricity market from collapsing.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Manager, Market Competition, Shittima Abdulkadir in a presentation at the Capacity Building workshop for Energy Correspondents titled:  “The Transitional Electricity Market (TEM), Issues and Challenges.” Read more

Nigeria will continue her quest for a place at next years Caf/Orange African Cup of Nations with a double header against the Sudanese national team in October .
