Football Weekend Preview: Arsenal Hosts Spurs In The North London Derby

The football weekend starts again after a bumper midweek of European club football and there are a host of interesting matches slated across different venues in Europe.

The English Premier League hosts one of such match with the North London Derby between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspurs at the Emirates Stadium, London.

Here is a preview of that and other matches involving the top clubs in the EPL:

The Gunners are 5th in the table after a great run of form. In their 13 matches, they have eight wins and two defeats, both of them coming at the start of this season.

The forwards have helped them to score 28 goals while they conceded 16 in return.

They are unbeaten in the last 17 competitive matches. The Gunners have an 11 match win streak in that period, as they won a total of 13 matches in the last 17 games.

At home, after a 7 match win streak in all competitions they are currently on a 3 match drawing streak.

Spurs are fresh from a massive 3-1 victory over Chelsea at home. That result would have given them a ton of confidence which will be crucial in this upcoming game.

Pochettino and his men are 3rd in the league with 10 wins and three defeats. With help of their talented strike force, they have scored 23 goals and conceded less than a goal per game.

The first Merseyside Derby in the Premier League is to take place on Sunday as Everton travel to Anfield.

The Reds are right behind Manchester City, with just two points between them. With 10 wins in their 13 matches, Liverpool is 2nd in the table.

They have the best defence in the competition which has conceded only five goals till now. The attacking lineup including Salah, Mane and Firmino has helped the team to score a total of 26 goals in the league.

In the last seven matches, they won five and lost only once. Even though they lost matches in the UCL, they are yet to be defeated in the Premier League.

Everton is 6th in the points table with six wins and three defeats. They have managed to score 20 goals and conceded 15 in return.

Sarri lost his first match as the Chelsea coach last week in an away fixture against Tottenham. He will be disappointed with his team’s performance and will want them to get back to their previous form as soon as possible.

With that defeats to Spurs they fell to 4th position in the table. After 13 matches, they have 28 points and are seven points behind the leaders, City.

Fulham is already in the relegation zone after 13 rounds are completed.

They have conceded 33 goals from their league games so far, which makes them the worst defensive unit in the competition.

Manchester United travel to St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday to take on Southampton as they search for their first Premier League win since November 3.

The Red Devils drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace in their last domestic match, after losing 3-1 to local rivals Manchester City earlier in the month.

Meanwhile, Mark Hughes’ side is in the drop zone having gone 11 games in all competitions without a win, in a run stretching back to September 1.

Manchester City heads into Saturday’s Premier League encounter with Bournemouth looking to extend their lead at the top of the standings to five points with each of their nearest rivals playing on Sunday.

Bournemouth makes the trip to the Etihad Stadium having suffered three successive defeats, but the Cherries still remain in eighth place in the table.

The Spanish La Liga also hosts some interesting matches involving the top clubs.

Real Madrid will be looking to keep in touch at the top of the table in a chaotic La Liga season on Saturday when they welcome Valencia to the Santiago Bernabeu.

While they picked up a victory in the UEFA Champions League at AS Roma on Tuesday, memories of their last domestic outing will still be vivid.

Los Blancos were hammered 3-0 at Eibar, with the team turning in one of their worst performances of what’s been a campaign to forget.

Valencia has endured a disappointing season to this point and was beaten by Juventus in the Champions League in midweek. However, they have shown some signs of life in La Liga recently, with two wins in their last two domestic games.

Girona avoided defeat in their two games against Atletico Madrid in their debut season in La Liga and they will be hoping for a repeat here.

They take excellent form into this Sunday’s game and would only be a point behind Atleti were they to chalk up maximum points. Atleti though is targeting top spot and victory would take them there, temporarily at least.

It’s difficult to know how Diego Simeone will view his side’s domestic season so far. From one perspective they are just 2 points off the top and in a position to mount a serious title challenge.

However, he may also feel as though Atleti have missed a chance to truly take advantage of the poor starts of both Barcelona and Real Madrid, who have both been dropping far more points than would have been expected.

Girona’s unbeaten streak also suggests they are capable of getting something from the game. They’ve done pretty well against the fancied teams this year, drawing at Barcelona and beating Valencia.

Barcelona hasn’t had the start to the season that many expected and find themselves chasing Sevilla. Things do look rosy on the European front after they made sure of top spot in their Champions League group following the 2-1 victory against PSV Eindhoven but back on the domestic scene it’s all attention on the visit of Villarreal, who arrive at Camp Nou after a goalless draw against ten-man Rangers in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Ernesto Valverde’s side will be looking to return to winning ways following two games without a win after the 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid.

The Yellow Submarine are sitting lowly down in 16th in the La Liga table, just three points away from being dragged into a relegation spot.

The preview of the German Bundesliga goes thus:

The reigning champions finally produced a strong showing on Tuesday night when they demolished Benfica 5-1 to book a place in the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Niko Kovac transformed the formation into Bayern’s famous 4-3-3 with Ribery and Robben as wing strikers and Robert Lewandowski as the central forward.

Niko Kovac’s men were shockingly easy to break down of late as they shipped three goals against Dortmund and Fortuna Dusseldorf each in past two rounds.

Werder did end the three-loss thread last weekend, but the 1-1 draw to Freiburg can’t be regarded as a huge success.

Dortmund looks to maintain their four-point cushion atop the league when they host Freiburg at Signal Iduna Park on Saturday.

Der BVB‘s thrilling 3-2 comeback against Bayern Munich in Der Klassiker just before the international break was the final piece of the puzzle needed to prove themselves as true title contenders, and with their 30 point total seeing them four points clear at the top and nine points clear of Bayern, it’s hard not to fancy their chances.

Freiburg went into the international break disappointed as their performance in the 3-1 defeat at home to Mainz contrasted the valiant 1-1 draw away to Bayern Munich in the game prior.

Here is a preview of matches in the Italian Serie A:

The reigning champions will travel to meet Fiorentina on round 14 of the Serie A on Saturday.

The Purple is 10th in the points table with four wins and three defeats.

But they have drawn more than they have won in the league. They are winless in the last six league matches and are currently on a 5 match drawing streak too.

The champions are the only team to be unbeaten in the league. At present they are on a 4 match win streak.

Milan is 5th in the table, with six wins and three defeats in their 13 games so far. They have been great at scoring thanks to the form of Higuaín.

The team managed by the former legend Gattuso has scored 22 goals while conceding 17.

Parma is just two points shy of their opponents for this upcoming match. With six wins and five losses, they are 6th in the table. If they manage to stay there until the end of the season they may get a chance for Europa League qualification.

Inter Milan look to keep some pressure on the top of the Serie A table with a result over the underperforming Roma.

Roma has won just one of their last five Serie A matches and find themselves in a very disappointing 7th place in the table, already some 18 points adrift of the dominant Juventus.

Inter Milan, on the other hand, is having an excellent domestic campaign. They finished 5 points behind Roma last season, but the arduous rebuild project at the San Siro is finally coming to fruition after a long and difficult few years.
