The Senator representing Akwa Ibom North West in the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has debunked news making the rounds that he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to gun for the presidency of the Senate.
Akpabio, a two-term governor in Akwa Ibom resigned his position as the Senate Minority leader shortly before his defection with many saying that he was preparing grounds to contest to become the Senate President, stated that his defection from the PDP has nothing to do with plans for the position for now.
Akpabio who cleared the air in a chat with Channels Television on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, shortly after his defection rally at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium, said there was no truth to insinuations that he is being prepped to become the Senate President, at least for now.
“I don’t have any intention of becoming Senate President today. But I have every intention to become what God wants me to be. My name is Godswill and I believe in the will of God,” he said in answer to questions whether his defection was to fulfil the ambition of becoming the Senate President.
“The problem you people have in Nigeria is to always think of winning. It’s not about winning an election, it is about participation.
And as far as I am concerned, anybody who goes to an election with the view to winning the election is somebody who must get it by all means and those are the election riggers.
Most politicians are concerned about the next election rather than the next generation. I want to be part of those who are concerned about the next generation.”
