A gunman who had taken hostages inside a police station in western Kenya has been shot dead, security sources have told Al Jazeera. The siege in Kapenguria began early on Thursday when the attacker opened fire at officers, leading to a hostage situation. While initial reports that reached Al Jazeera said the man was a suspected recruiter for the al-Shabab armed group, later reports said the man was a “disgruntled policeman”.
“We are told that the siege is over,” Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi, reporting from the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, said. “What we are hearing is that the gunman was shot by special forces who were deployed to the Kapenguria police station,” Soi said, adding that the police were expected to release a statement shortly. Earlier, Police Inspector General Joseph Boinnet had said in a statement that commandos had surrounded the police station in an attempt to bring the standoff to an end. Read more
