Gunman opens fire outside Nigeria school, 12 injured – police

A gunman opened fire on Friday outside a school in northeast Nigeria’s city of Potiskum, seriously wounding 12 students in an area repeatedly targeted by Boko Haram, a police officer and witnesses said.

“We have evacuated 12 people with serious gunshot wounds to hospital from the scene of the shooting attack,” said the officer, who requested anonymity.  Read more

Cameron close to victory in UK election

British Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative Party looks set to continue in power, with projections and seats already announced giving his party a majority.

The results seem to confirm a shock exit poll projection published by British broadcasters late on Thursday night that put the party way ahead of the opposition Labour Party with 316 seats. Updated projections put the Conservatives on 329, an absolute majority. Read more

 

‘STF at war with militia, not civilians in Plateau’

THE Special Task Force (STF) in Plateau State, on Thursday said that it was at war with a militia group and not civilians. “We are at war with a militia group that killed six of our men a week ago; we have no quarrel with the civilian populace,” STF spokesman, Capt. Iweha Ikedichi, said in Wase.

Meanwhile, the Ngwang Ishi O’tarok (NIO) a socio-cultural and political group of Taroh people of Wase local council of Plateau State has accused the STF and the 3rd Amoured Division of the Nigerian Army, Jos and Plateau State government of planned genocide against Taroh Nation.  Read more

Ngige denies rancour in APC over south-west interest

Senator Chris Ngige on Thursday in Abuja denied reports that issues of power sharing was threatening the stability of the All Progressives Congress in the South-East.

He said it was untrue that the Igbos were divided over the position of the Secretary General of the Federation.

Ngige made this known while interacting with newsmen at the sidelines of the visit of a delegation of Ohaneze Ndigbo to the President-elect, retired Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.  Read more

 

Norwegian, Philippine envoys among 6 dead in Pakistan helicopter crash

A Pakistani military helicopter crashed into a school in the country’s north Friday, killing six people including the Norwegian and Philippine ambassadors, and setting the building ablaze, the army said as officials warned that casualties could rise.

The helicopter was one of three carrying a delegation of envoys to inspect projects on a three-day trip to Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan territory where they were set to meet with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.  Read more

Robbers shoot bank customer in Lagos

Some robbers on Thursday shot a man, who came out of a bank on Mushin Road in the Isolo area of Lagos, collected his money and fled.

Our correspondent learnt that the victim, whose name had yet to be ascertained, was attacked while entering his vehicle. He was reportedly shot in the head and in the stomach.  Read more

28-year-old lady escapes from ritual killers

The Ogun State Police Command has uncovered another suspected ritual killers’ den in Unity and Peace Estate along Itele-Lafenwa Road, Ota in the Ado Odo-Ota Local Government Area.

The latest discovery was made possible by the escape of a 28-year-old lady, who had been kept in an uncompleted building in the estate, bound hands and feet.  Read more

Policeman’s son arrested for murder

The police in Lagos have arrested the son of a police officer, Sunday Omosuyi, and a painter, Qudus Mustapha, for alleged involvement in cultism and the killing of one, Taiye Iyanda.

The victim, who was a member of the Oodua People’s Congress, was the son of a police officer attached to a division in the Ajegunle area.  Read more

Businessman crushed to death during police stop -and-search

Four policemen have been arrested in Lagos for mounting an illegal checkpoint at the Mile 2 end of the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway and conducting unapproved stop-and-search.

It was gathered that during the exercise, a tanker ran over a businessman, Mr. Henry Dimoji.  Read more

Graduate goes missing after graduation

A graduate of computer science, Valentine Jegede, has gone missing on the way to his hometown in Kanji, Niger State, after collecting his Bachelor of Science degree certificate.

It was learnt that the 27-year-old man had left Kanji on April 28 to collect his result at the North American University, Cotonou, Benin Republic in preparation for the National Youth Service Corps exercise.  Read more

Supreme Court ruling on constitution: NASS not served – Senators

Senator Ita Enang (Uyo North East Senatorial District) has stated that the National Assembly is yet to be served with court processes that brought about the Supreme Court Judgement regarding the amendment of the 1999 constitution.

The Ogun State House of Assembly has started the review of the state’s Debt Management Office law to ensure that any civil servant appointed to the post of Director General must not be below the rank of director.

The review provides that the appointee enjoys the benefits accruable to a Permanent Secretary while serving as director general.  Read more

NYSC admits mix-up in Benue call-up dates, posts 2,200 to Taraba

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has admitted a mix-up in reporting dates for the 2015 Batch ‘A’ corps members deployed to Benue State for orientation course.
NYSC spokesperson, Mrs. Abosede Aderigbibe, said in a statement yesterday that the orientation course in the Benue camp, like in some other states, had been planned to take place in two streams with Stream I slated for May 5 to 25, 2015 and Stream II to hold from June 2 to 22.
According to Aderigbibe, corps members deployed for the Stream II exercise in the state also reported at the camp between May 5 and 6 as against their scheduled date of June 2 due to an error in their call-up letters.  Read more

Air Force wants night vision jets to end insurgency

Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Adesola Amosu has asked for the acquisition of Forward Looking Infra Red Radar technology to drastically enhance the capability of the Air Force to end insurgency in the country.
The Air Chief disclosed this yesterday at the Air Force headquarters, Abuja during a press conference as part of activities to celebrate the 51th anniversary of the Service.
Amosu pushed for the use of Network Enabled Capability (NEC), saying it will enhance the responsiveness, effectiveness and control of fighter jets and attack helicopters in counter insurgency operations.  Read more
