Sen. Ahmed Makarfi, a presidential aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday said he was confident of picking the party’s ticket for the 2019 election. Makarfi made the declaration at an interactive session with newsmen in Lagos on Sunday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Makarfi, a former governor of Kaduna State who also served as the Chairman, PDP National Caretaker Committee, is now one of the over 12 presidential aspirants of the party. The PDP aspirant, who just concluded meetings with PDP members in the Southwest, said his exceptional performance as chairman of the caretaker committee would give him an upper hand at the primaries. Politicians and presidents from across the political divide have paid tribute to Senator John McCain and his decades of service following his death at the age of 81. The former presidential candidate and war hero died on Saturday after a year-long battle with brain cancer. Pressure mounts on Buhari to fire NSA Monguno, Magu (Nation)

Loyalists of the immediate past Director-General of the Department of State Security Service (DSS), Mr. Lawal Daura have launched a move to make the National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Babagana Monguno and the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu pay for his sack. The loyalists, including some members of the President’s kitchen cabinet and kinsmen, are understood to be putting pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari to fire Monguno and Magu. Challenged by current realities, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has concluded plans to make direct primaries – choosing party candidates through voting by all members – optional. THISDAY learnt that two major reasons were behind the decision, namely, the fear of a backlash from insistence on direct primaries, considering the closeness of elections, and the cost implication of involving all members in primary elections. Okowa’s aides, 5,000 others dump PDP for APC (Punch)

Two Special Assistants to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and over 5,000 members of the People’s Democratic Party in the state have defected to the All Progressives Congress. The defectors who vowed to team up with other APC leaders to “rescue the state from the grips of the PDP,” accused the administration of Okowa of “lacking the foresight to develop the state.” While receiving the new APC members at the official declaration of the former chairman of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue, Mr. Thomas Joel-Onowakpo, for the House of Representatives, Isoko Federal Constituency, the state factional chairman, Jones Erue, said the APC expected nore people from the PDP. Third Mainland Bridge reopened (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has announced that the Third Mainland Bridge, which was temporarily closed for Investigative Maintenance Test, would be reopened by 5pm on Sunday (today). The State Government, in a statement by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Dr. Taiwo Salaam, said the decision to reopen the bridge earlier than announced followed the completion of the test by engineers. Mr Abdullahi Danbaba, the Special Assistant on Non-Governmental Affairs to Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara has resigned his appointment to stay in All Progressives Congress (APC). Danbaba announced his resignation in a letter obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Sunday, which was addressed to Gov. Ahmed through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG). FG flags off N22.7bn road rehabilitation project in Adamawa (Guardian)

The Federal Government has flagged off the rehabilitation of the 122 kilometre Mayo Belwa-Jada-Ganye-Toungo road in Adamawa which will cost N22.7 billion. Mr Babatunde Fashola, (SAN) the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, disclosed this in a statement by Mr Theodore Ogaziechi, the Director of Information in the ministry. Fashola, represented by Alhaji Mustapha Shehuri, the Minister of State 1 in the ministry at the occasion marking the commencement of the project, said the road was due for rehabilitation. Read more

NAF wants quick delivery of A-29 Super Tucano Aircraft (Punch)

The Chief of the Air Staff , Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has appealed to the manufacturers of the A-29 Super Tucano Attack Aircraft, to expedite action on its  delivery  to Nigeria. Abubakar said this when Mr Taco Gilbert, the Senior Vice – President of Sierra Nevada Corporation , manufacturer of the aircraft, visited him  in Abuja. The Air Force chief said a quick delivery of the aircraft  would  enhance Nigerian Air Force’s (NAF) operational capability for the swift conclusion of the counterinsurgency operations in the North- east. More women in Nigeria are getting involved in drug abuse from mixed concoctions to momentary “forget their worries and problems” of living. Also, unsuspecting members of the public, particularly those who eat from roadside eateries and make shift ‘bukateria’ are getting hooked  on drugs without them knowing because some unscrupulous food vendors mix their delicacies with concoctions to induce addiction to their meals and boost sales. Plateau: Gunmen kill speaker’s head driver, 1 other (Guardian)

Unidentified gunmen have killed Mr Azi Magaji, the head driver to the Plateau House of Assembly Speaker, and Mr Edward Ankpa, a security personnel with the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH). DSP Terna Tyopev, the Plateau Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Jos. Tyopev said the killing occurred Saturday night in Zarazong community of Jos North Local Government Area of the state. Magaji was walking by when he was attacked by the gunmen. “Last night, at about 9.p.m, we received a distress call that there were sporadic gunshots at Zarazong area of Jos, a community that houses Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
