Founder and chairman of Zenith Bank, Nigeria, Jim Ovia was honoured at the ninth edition of the African Banker Awards, with a Lifetime Achievement award and the African Banker Icon award.
The ninth edition of the Awards, hosted by African Banker magazine was held at a prestigious Gala dinner in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire on 27th May, with over 500 dignitaries in attendance. Among them were a number of African Ministers of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors, along with the CEOs of some of Africa’s leading Banks and financial institutions.
Morocco’s Groupe Banque Populaire took the award for African Bank of the Year, while Ghana’s Albert Essien, Group CEO of Ecobank won the award for African Banker of the Year. Ivorian Tidjane Thiam, the first African CEO of a FTSE100 company also won in the African Banker Icon and Lifetime Achievement categories.
Albert Essien from Ghana inherited a bank in a precarious position last year, but managed to steady the ship and bring in some important shareholders to strengthen Ecobank’s capital base.
