There was joy amongst the residents of Owerri, the Imo State capital on Monday after the arrest of the leader of a gang that abducted a member of the staff of the National Population Commission (NPC).
The armed gang kidnapped Amasike Ameleonye in July after shooting his police orderly and snatching his rifle in Okwelle in the Onuimo Local Government Area of the state.
The victim who was ransomed for the sum of N5m before he was released was in the state to see his relatives.
The state Commissioner of Police (CP), Dasuki Galadanchi, who briefed journalists at the command’s headquarters said that the arrest of the kidnap kingpin, Chukwuemeka Uzoukwu, was a major breakthrough in crime fighting in the state.
The CP described Uzoukwu as the most wanted kidnapper in the state and the tactical unit of the command was activated to apprehend the gunman.
Galandamchi said, “He was arrested at Ihiagwa in Owerri West LGA by the Operatives of the SARS led by ASP Banjoko Oluwemimo.
“His name is Chukwuemeka Uzoukwu, 23, aka White. He is from Uhusieke Owerri Nkworji in Imo State. He has been on our wanted list”.
