Justice Ademola retires as FHC Judge (Vanguard)

Justice Adeniyi Ademola who was among eight superior court judges that were arrested after a “sting operation” the Department of State Service, DSS, conducted in October last year, has voluntarily retired from the Federal High Court bench. A source disclosed  that the Judge tendered his resignation letter to the National Judicial Council late in the evening on Wednesday after he had presided over several cases, four of which were criminal matters. The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Wednesday dispelled the rumour that the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) would be increased.  He gave this explanation while addressing state house correspondents at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), which was presided over by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. He said that the Minister of Petroleum (State), Dr Ibe Kachikwu, would have been at the briefing but had to go for an urgent meeting in order to resolve the petroleum scarcity in the country. Physically challenged persons to protest neglect of disability bill at National Assembly (Guardian)

A cross section of the over 25 million Nigerians living with various forms of disability will today protest the alleged neglect of the Disability Bill to the National Assembly.  Executive Director, Centre for Citizens with Disability (CCD), David Anyaele, disclosed at a media briefing that the action was to stress the place of physically challenged persons in the society and the critical roles most of them play in the public and private sectors. Ondo APC: Kekemeke, others seek acting chairman’s removal (Punch)

The embattled Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Ondo State, Mr. Isaac Kekemeke, and some other aggrieved leaders in the state on Wednesday called on the National Chairman of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, to remove the state’s Acting Chairman of the party, Mr. Ade Adetimehin.  Kekemeke was reportedly suspended by a three-man disciplinary committee over allegations of “gross misconduct and anti-party activities” and thereafter Adetimehin, who was the deputy chairman, was appointed as the acting chairman of the party. NBC empowers over 700 youths in Kano (Vanguard)

The Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (NBC) has empowered over 700 youths at the Kano edition of its program, ‘Youth Empowered’ Workshop. The workshop is part of the Coca-Cola Hellenic global initiative designed to support over 500,000 young unemployed people between the ages of 18-30 by 2020, to build life and business skills and long-lasting networks that would translate to meaningful employment and self-sufficiency. Herdsmen sack 200 families in Cross River (Vanguard)

No fewer than 200 families have fled their homes at Mbiabong Ito community, in Ito South clan, Odukpani Local Government Area, Cross River State, following the invasion of the community by herdsmen. Vanguard learned that the herdsmen, who drove a large herd of cows into the community’s farmlands, were believed to have forcefully resisted attempts by the villagers to deny them access to land for grazing. An indigene, Effiong Asuquo, told Vanguard that as gunshots rent the air, late Tuesday evening, the villagers had to run into the bush when it became apparent that the herdsmen had more sophisticated weapons. NFF gives Rohr pay rise (Vanguard)

Nigeria Football Federation has given Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr a pay rise in the new contract offer made to the coach who guided Nigeria through a seamless World Cup qualification campaign. The German-born Rohr has already signed the contract that will see him in charge of the Super Eagles beyond 2019. “We offered him a new contract which he has accepted,” NFF president Amaju Pinnick said. “They are going about the documentation now. Patagonia joins lawsuit to block Trump’s cuts to Utah’s Bears Ears (USToday)

A flurry of lawsuits challenging President Trump’s decision to chop up two large national monuments in Utah could finally bring an answer to the much-debated question of whether presidents have the legal authority to undo or change monuments created by past presidents.  Until that question is answered months or years from now, the fate of the contested lands in Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments will remain unresolved.  Proclamations signed Monday by the president allow lands no longer protected as a national monument to be opened up in 60 days to mining, but conservation and tribal groups will likely try to keep that from happening.
