Ahead of another emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) which is expected to put an end to the ongoing controversy about tenure elongation for party leaders at all levels of the party, Kano state Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has they were against the idea because it will affect the fortunes of the party and portray it as an undemocratic party. The Governor said he was not part of the tenure elongation idea said those of them who were not in support of the idea have managed to convince the governors in favour to jettison the idea and embrace an elective convention where new leaders will emerge. Looters’ list: APC, PDP in a show of shame, says Okogie (Punch)

A former President, Christian Association of Nigeria, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi-Okogie, has lambasted both the ruling All Progressives Congress and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party on their accusations and counter-accusations over those who looted Nigeria’s treasury. The retired Lagos Archbishop of the Catholic Church described the back and forth accusations between the two major parties as a show of shame. Okogie stated this in a press statement, titled, ‘We Are Watching and Waiting 2.’ The statement was the second in the series that the cleric sent to The Punch on Thursday. Read more

SGF cancels EFCC on how to tackle corruption (SUN)

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. Boss Mustapha, has advised the Economic and Financial Crimes commission (EFCC) on how to tackle corruption. He told the Chairman of EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, and his management team, who were in his office on a courtesy call, to devise “mechanisms for tackling institutional corruption at the conception stage.” According to a statement, issued on Friday, by the Director of Press, Office of the SGF, Lawrence Ojabo, Mustapha urged the commission to use advocacy campaigns to change the mind-sets of individuals, who worked in organisations and regarded corrupt tendencies and practices as their preferred way of guaranteeing a secured post-service life. Obasanjo calls on Sierra Leone president, Boi, to sustain ties with Nigeria (Punch)

A former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has called on the newly elected President of Sierra Leone, Julius Bio, to sustain the country’s relationship with Nigeria, which was strengthened during the time of the immediate past President, Ernest Bai Koroma. This call was contained in a congratulatory letter he sent to Bio on Thursday, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent by Obasanjo’s media aide, Kehinde Akinyemi, on Friday in Abeokuta. Bio won the presidential run-off on Wednesday. While he congratulated him, he noted that the people of Sierra Leone have spoken. Read more

Constituents want Gbajabiamila to seek another term (SUN)

Residents of Surulere Federal Constituency 1 have passed a vote of confidence on Leader of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, urging him to seek another term. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the residents endorsed Gbajabiamila on Thursday evening via a voice vote at a special assembly in Surulere, Lagos. Those present at the well-attended assembly include the state Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr Agboola Dabiri and a recently appointed board member of the National Agricultural Extension Liason Services, Mrs Ganiat Alli-Balogun. A former Chairman of Surulere Local Government, Mr Rasaq Folami, a former Sole Administrator of the council, Mr Sheriff Balogun and a stalwart of the All Progressives Congress in the area, Mr Kayode Shittu were also present. Jostling for APC Chairmanship Begins, Oyegun, Oshiomhole, Ebri Emerge Contenders (ThisDay)

Barely 24 hours after governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the National Working Committee (NWC) seemingly resolved the quagmire that had arisen over President Muhammadu Buhari’s rejection of the 12 months tenure extension granted to elected and appointed executives of the party at all levels, APC stakeholders have turned their sights on national chairmanship seat. Thisday reliably gathered Thursday that names of possible contenders for the post were already being bandied around among different interested groups in the party. Prominent among the contenders are the incumbent national chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who is eligible to seek another four years in office, the former governor of Edo State Adams Oshiomhole, and a former governor of Cross River State in the Third Republic, Clement Ebri. Bayelsa House of Assembly passes 2018 Appropriation Bill (SUN)

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has passed the 2018 appropriation Bill put at N318 billion with an increment of N21.78bn from the N295 billion presented by the State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson on the 22nd December, 2017. Speaker of the Bayelsa Assembly, Hon. Kombowei Benson, while speaking on what transpired at the Committee of Supply stage where the final consideration was made, assured that when signed into law, the executive arm will ensure proper implementation like it has done with other previous budget signed into law. Drama as sacked Kogi police chief is reinstated (Guardian)

Sacked Kogi State Police Commissioner Mr. Ali Janga was yesterday restored to his former position after meeting the seven-day ultimatum to re-arrest six suspects who escaped from custody in the Senator Dino Melaye’s case. Janga, according to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ibrahim Idris, was able to meet the deadline after he was removed as commissioner and replaced with Mr. Sunday Ogbu. It was learnt that influential figures in the state were averse to the idea of having a new commissioner and that there was no proper handover to Ogbu. Read more

Hollywood actor, John Boyega has expressed willingness to invest in Nollywood to further boost the movie sector. Boyega, 27, spoke with newsmen on Thursday night on the sideline of Glenfidich circle of maverick’s business meeting organised by PlayNetwork Nigeria in collaboration with Transcorp Hilton in Abuja. The British-Nigerian born actor said he intends to spend some time in Nigeria to produce a movie based on and inspired by Nigerian lifestyle and heritage. “I intend to tour most parts of Nigeria for seven months to sort out few things and get inspiration for the movie. Kiss Daniel in search of fan who returned N14m diamond necklace (Vanguard)

Nigerian singer Kiss Daniel is in search of a fan who handed back a very valuable diamond chain during his performance. An estimate put the value of the diamond at N14million, about $39,000. The fan who apparently stood on the front row at a concert in Lagos, in which Kiss Daniel featured, saw the chain and returned it to the star. “I really wanna appreciate the fan that gave back my chain when it fell off last night. That’s a fortune right there,” Kiss Daniel wrote on Facebook. He then went on to ask fans to help find the person for him, as he wants to show some appreciation. “I have something for him”, he said in the note accompanying the video. Read more

Bandits attack: Police recover 10 corpses in Benue communities (Tribune)

The Benue Police Command says it has recovered 10 corpses of villagers killed by suspected armed bandits in Tse-Audu and Enger villages in Gwer West Local Government Area of the state. In a statement on Friday in Makurdi, the command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Moses Yamu said the corpses were victims of the Thursday attacks on the villages. He said they had been found by the mobile police contingent deployed to Naka, the capital of the local government council. Read more

Brothers beat uncle to death for making bad coffin for their dad (Punch)

It was a double tragedy for a family after a man was beaten to death by his nephews who were angered by his refusal to destroy a coffin he had made for their father who died on Sunday. The 60-year-old man of Kaburetwa village, Trans Nzoia in Kenya who was a carpenter, had made the coffin without the consent of his four nephews, leading to a deadly confrontation on Thursday evening. The four brothers: Gilbert Wafula, 27; Makokha Khaemba, 47; Andrew Nyongesa, 52; and Michael Wamalwa, 17, confronted their uncle, asking him to destroy the coffin but he declined. Read more

Commonwealth Games: D’Tigers suffer 65-110 shock defeat to New Zealand (Guardian)

The Nigerian national basketball team, D’Tigers, were defeated on Friday by New Zealand in their first men’s preliminary round match at the on-going Commonwealth Games holding in Gold Coast, Australia. D’Tigers, who are in Pool A alongside hosts Australia, New Zealand and Canada, were dominated throughout the proceedings by the Tall Blacks, as the New Zealand basketball team are referred to. Nigerian boxers crash out of Commonwealth Games (Nation)

Osita Umeh suffered defeat in the male welterweight 69kg boxing event on Thursday as he was outclassed by India’s Manoj Kumar at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kumar dominated in all the three rounds to secure a 5-0 unanimous decision against the 19-year-old Nigerian in the round of 32 encounter. Kumar took round one 10-9, 10-9, 10-9, 10-9 and 10-9. In round two, it was another total domination of 10-9, 10-9, 10-9, 10-9 and 10-9. Read more

Brazilian judge orders arrest of former president Lula (Guardian)

A Brazilian judge has ordered the arrest of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva whose appeal to avoid prison on corruption charges was denied by the supreme court on Wednesday. The arrest warrant, ordered on Thursday evening by Judge Sergio Moro, who leads Brazil’s mammoth Car Wash investigation, stipulates that Lula must hand himself in by 5pm local time to federal police in the southern city of Curitiba, though it is also understood that he can hand himself in at the São Paulo branch. Lula’s defence team issued a note saying that they had filed a request to the UN human rights committee requesting interim measures to block the arrest warrant, alleging bias and violation of right to presumption of innocence. Fraudster jailed for pretending to be victim of Grenfell Tower fire (Guardian)

Joyce Msokeri has been jailed for four-and-a-half years for fraud after posing as a Grenfell Tower survivor in a £19,000 scam. The 47-year-old showed no emotion as she was sentenced at the Old Bailey for three counts of fraud against the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the Hilton and a number of charities respectively, and one charge of possessing a false document. Msokeri, who was convicted on 15 March after a trial at Southwark crown court, told authorities she had escaped the blaze in west London last June but her husband had died. She was actually single and living miles away at the time. Read more

Hundreds protest after New York police kill man wielding pipe (BBC)

Hundreds of people took to the streets in Brooklyn, New York a day after police shot and killed a black man with mental health issues. Saheed Vassell, 34, was shot dead on Wednesday after police received calls of a man who appeared to be wielding a silver pistol and aiming it at people. Officers and bystanders mistook the metal pipe in his hands for a gun, the New York Police Department (NYPD) said. “If he was a white kid, he would not have died,” his aunt, Nora Ford said.
