Scores of youths under the aegis of Kwara Agenda on Wednesday protested against alleged plot to implicate Senate President Bukola Saraki on criminal case. The protesting youths took their peaceful rally the Kwara state Government House, Ilorin, the state capital. Leader of the group, Taofiq Olateju told Governor Abdulfattah Ahmed the plot was to link Saraki with a murder case involving one Lanre Mohammed Soliu, who was recently paraded by the police in the state over alleged involvement in cult related murders. The protestors carried several placards with various inscriptions such as “Fresh plot to frame Saraki uncovered”, “Stop intimidating Saraki”, “We stand with Saraki” among others. Read more

Finally, Senate passes 2018 budget (Punch)

The Senate has passed the 2018 Appropriation Bill following the consideration and adoption of the report by the joint National Assembly Committee on Appropriation. The report was laid before the Senate on Tuesday, while the lawmakers considered and adopted it at an extended plenary on Wednesday. The same version of the report was presented in the Senate and House of Representatives. President Muhammadu Buhari had presented the budget of N8.612trn to the parliament for passage in November 2017; but the National Assembly raised the estimate to N9.12trn. Read more

Nigerians react as Osinbajo teaches internally displaced kids ‘prophetic’ song (Punch)

Nigerians have reacted to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s activities at the Internally Displaced Persons’ camp at Abagena in Benue State. Osinbajo had engaged in a sing-along with internally displaced children living in the camp during an official visit to the beleaguered state. Benue had experienced several attacks by persons suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, leading to the killing of hundreds of people, with thousands currently displaced from their ancestral lands. Members of the Ijaw Community Association on Wednesday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to focus more in developing the Niger Delta region. The group lamented that the region had been neglected despite contributing its resources to the development of the country. The first runner-up in the Saturday All Progressives Congress primary in Ekiti State, Segun Oni, has threatened to leave the party if he is not treated with respect. He also demanded that his supporters must be respected and not victimised by the winner of the primary, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, and his supporters. Fayemi won the primary by polling 941 votes ahead of Oni, who polled 481 votes, among other 31 aspirants. Don’t search Wike’s house, Court orders Police, EFCC, DSS (Vanguard)

The Federal High Court Abuja has barred the Nigerian Police, the EFCC and the Department of State Security Service, (DSS) from searching houses belonging to Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers. Wike had in 2017, approached the court seeking an order of injunction restraining the IGP, the Police, the EFCC and the DSS from obtaining a search warrant to search any of his houses. Delivering judgement on the matter on Wednesday, Justice Ahmed Mohammed noted that the defendants were in agreement that the plaintiff, Wike, could not be investigated based on the provision of Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution. Court adjourns ruling on Jang’s bail Application to May 24 (Vanguard)

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Wednesday arraigned former governor of Plateau State and the senator representing Plateau North in the National Assembly, Jonah David Jang, in Jos High Court over allegation of fraud while he was governor of the state. This is even as the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) has withdrawn its charges against the senator to avoid duplication of court process. Counsel to ICPC, Mr. Adesina Raheem, an Assistant Director, said: “We got an information the EFCC has also filed criminal charges against the defendant. We had a discussion with the EFCC and it was resolved that we should withdraw ours to avoid duplication of court process.” Read more

NDLEA raids Abia market, arrests four hard drug suspects (Nation)

Personnel of the Abia State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have reportedly arrested four suspected drug addicts in Aba, the commercial nerve of the state. Oil prices hit record high (Memo)

Oil prices hit a three-and-a-half-year high yesterday supported by tight supply as well as renewed US sanctions against Iran that are likely to disrupt crude oil exports from one of the Middle East’s major producers. Brent crude hit $79.02 a barrel, a 79 cent increase, registering its highest level since November 2014. US crude rose 40 cents to $71.36 a barrel, also near its highest level since November 2014. World oil prices have risen more than 70 per cent over the past year because of the sharp increase in demand as well as production cuts by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) led by Saudi Arabia with other major producers, including Russia. Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan reach agreement on Nile dispute (Memo)

Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan have reached an agreement in their ongoing dispute over the construction of the Renaissance Dam on the River Nile. Progress was made in talks held yesterday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, to discuss the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), a $4 billion infrastructure project being undertaken by Ethiopia. The foreign ministers of Egypt and Ethiopia and Sudan’s water resources minister have said they will set up a scientific study group to consult on the construction of the dam, and leaders from the three nations will meet every six months for consultations on progress. More high-level talks are set to take place on 3 July in Cairo.  Read more

The ‘world’s oldest woman’ claims to have never lived a happy day in her life. Koku Istambulova is apparently 128 years old so that is a long time to be miserable. Her birth date of June 1, 1889, was apparently confirmed by the Russian government on her passport but it’s still hard to believe considering the oldest person ever documented was 122. Despite possibly being a record breaker Ms Istambulova, who lives in a village in Chechnya, is not too happy with her life. Read more
