Lausanne, Switzerland has been selected to host the third Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2020. The headquarters of the International Olympic Committee was chosen Friday as the site of the age-restricted sports event.
Lausanne defeated Brasov and Romania in a vote of IOC members and will become the third European city to stage the quadrennial event, following Innsbruck, Austria, in 2012 and Lillehammer, Norway, next February. Both Innsbruck (1964) and Lillehammer (1994) also hosted the Olympic Winter Games. Lillehammer was also the site of the Paralympic Winter Games in 1994, while Innsbruck hosted the Paralympics in 1984 and 1988.
Lake Placid, New York, host of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Games, and Sofia, Bulgaria, also had expressed interest in staging the event but never submitted formal applications.
The Youth Olympic Games are a younger, smaller version of the Olympic Games with all of the same sports but fewer events. The program also typically includes events new to any type of Olympic program, including monobobsled, and mixed nation and mixed gender events. The Games are limited to athletes 15 to 18 years old.
