The sacked Director-General of the Directorate of State Service (DSS), Lawal Daura seems to be in more trouble as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), is set to interrogate him over an allegation of N17 billion fraud missing in the coffers of the security agency.
Daura who was fired by the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and immediately arrested over the invasion of the National Assembly by operatives of the DSS is still in detention and according to reports, the EFCC will now move in to interrogate him after the police must have concluded its investigations into the NASS siege.
An EFCC source told Daily Trust that operatives of the anti-graft agency have been visiting the Police Force Headquarters at Guzape, Abuja, where Daura is being detained and will begin their interrogation soon.
The source said:
“It is expected that the former DSS boss will be handed over to the EFCC by the police for further interrogation to explain how the N17 billion traced to the headquarters of the DSS was utilized.”
The money, it was gathered, was left behind by the Daura’s predecessor at the DSS, Ita Ekpeyong who had received the sum of N20 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at the end of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.
Ekpeyong was alleged to have converted N17 billion into US dollars which he left behind when he handed over to Daura.
The funds were reportedly traced by EFCC investigators as a fall out of discoveries after the $43 billion linked to the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) found stashed at a private apartment inside Osborne Towers in Ikoyi, Lagos.
EFCC sources said operatives of the commission had been working on the investigation report that indicted the management of the DSS, but that the investigation was frustrated by Daura as DSS agents, on the orders of Daura, prevented EFCC agents from arresting Ekpeyong and sacked DG of NIA Ayo Oke on November 21, 2017, to prevent the investigation.
