National Youth Leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Honourable Sunday Udeh-Okoye, has berated President Muhammadu Buhari over his London comments in which he described some Nigerian youths as lazy and uneducated. Faulting the President’s remarks, Udeh-Okoye insisted in a statement he issued in Abuja yesterday that the Nigerian youth remained the “most innovative, enterprising, hardworking, and patriotic,” saying come 2019, the youths will speak with their Permanent Voters’ Card (PVCs). He said: “The best answer to this assault on the sensibilities of the Nigerian youth is to obtain PVC and be ready to repay the President in his own coin in 2019 by showing him the red card across the country. Lawyers react as Nigeria police classify pepper spray as offensive weapon (PremiumTimes)

Last Tuesday, a Twitter user, Dolapo Pizzu, alerted Abayomi Shogunle, an Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Police Complaint Rapid Response Unit, that she had been arrested and taken to a police station at Igando, Lagos, for being in possession of a pepper spray. Mr. Shogunle responded: “What are you doing with a pepper spray?

Pepper spray is an offensive weapon, Nigeria 🇳🇬 Law prohibits going armed in the public.” With pepper spray used as self-defence weapon by most ladies in Lagos against sexual harassment, Premium Times sought the opinion of lawyers on the illegality of its use. Read more

Buhari returns from London (Vanguard)

President Muhammadu Buhari Saturday evening returned from his London trip where he attended the Commonwealth Head of Government meeting, CHOGM. The President has also paid tribute to Nigeria’s foremost social critic and selfless legal luminary, Chief Abdul Ganiyu ‘‘Gani’’ Fawehinmi, SAN, on his posthumous 80tth birthday, describing the late legal icon ‘‘as a true conscience of the nation, defender of democracy and people’s rights advocate’’. Buhari in the tribute which was contained in a statement signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, described the late activist as an extraordinary human being and a great reference for all progressive elements in the society. Omo-Agege is a victim, not a villain (Vanguard)

Ovie Omo-Agege is senator representing the Urhobo nation and the people of Delta Central. A scion of the Omo-Agege family from Orogun and son of former Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice   James Omo Agege, he came into the Senate as a member of the Labour Party (LP) before moving to All Progressives Congress (APC). On Thursday, April 12, 2018, the Senate suspended him for 90 legislative days after receiving the report from its Ethics and Privileges Committee which had recommended that Omo-Agege be suspended for 181 days. The reason for the suspension of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege was that he expressed his constitutionally guaranteed right to expression of an opinion under Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). 10 Killed in fresh attack on Benue Communities (ThisDay)

Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen on Friday night attacked six Benue communities killing at least ten people. The six communities attacked were Tse -Abi, Tse-Ginde, Tse-Peviv, Tse Ikyo, Agenke and Gbenke in Guma Local Government Area. The attack occurred after residents had gone to bed. They were suddenly awakened by sporadic gunshots. According to a resident who pleaded not to be named, the attackers came from the bush, shooting and hacking people down with machetes. Read more

15 VGC residents on trial for alleged energy theft (Punch)

No fewer than 15 residents of Victoria Garden City, Ajah, on Lekki-Epe Expressway are to be prosecuted for their alleged involvement in energy theft,  Eko Electricity Distribution Company  said on Friday. EKEDC alleged that the customers stole energy by bypassing its meters. The Managing Director, Mr Adeoye Fadeyibi, who disclosed this at a media briefing, said no effort would be spared in dealing with energy theft. Read more

Mother arrested after son, 7, arrives at school high on cocaine (Independent)

A mother has been arrested in the US after her seven-year-old son turned up to school high on cocaine, it has been reported. Teachers called paramedics after the youngster became drowsy and unresponsive at North Elementary School in Urbana, Ohio. Hospital doctors discovered the class a drug in the boy’s system after running tests, according to local news channel WDTN. His mother, who has not been named, was detained by police after she arrived at Urbana Mercy Health Hospital to collect the child – and was then herself found to be under the influence of cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl. Austin Powers actor Verne Troyer dies

Verne Troyer, best known for his role as Mini-Me in the Austin Powers movies, has died at the age of 49. The 2ft 8in actor had struggled with alcoholism for years and had reportedly been in hospital on life support, where he was treated for alcohol poisoning. A post on his official Instagram account read: ‘It is with great sadness and incredibly heavy hearts to write that Verne passed away today. ‘Verne was an extremely caring individual. He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh. Anybody in need, he would help to any extent possible. Read more
