Lil  Kesh is a big deal by Jite Efemuaye

There is something about being the new kid on the block and for Lil Kesh, being nominated for MAMA has to be like the first day at school.

At the press conference before the Road to MAMA concert in Lagos on Friday, June 4, the not so lil guy fiddled with his hand band, (I couldn’t tell  the colour from where  sat), but I noticed he was the only one that had it on.

He must also have noticed because by the time VJ Ehiz got to him with questions, he had slipped it off – taking a cue from the more experienced kids, Yemi Alade, Patoranking and Diamond.

Being the new kid also means you get to do the grunt work, like be the first one to perform at a show. It is common practice in Nigeria (and elsewhere?) for artistes to perform in order of perceived importance/popularity which doesn’t make sense to me because wouldn’t you rather hit the crowd when they are at their freshest?

Lil Kesh had a good time on stage, bringing some of his playful energy that had the audience singing along with him to the lines of Gbese that blasted from the speakers.

Phyno joined him on stage for Ladi and Lil Kesh held his own beside Baba Igbo who is on the MAMA nominees list for best Hip Hop and best collaboration (with Diamond).

Lil Kesh has been nominated under one category, Song of the Year for Shoki Remix; competing with other Nigerians, Wizkd, Yemi Alade and Mavins. No matter how that turns out, the singles he has released so far have definitely won him a place in the hearts of Nigerians.

The The MTV Africa Music Awards will take place on July 18th, 2015 in Durban, South Africa.
