Makoko is on fire – Toni Kan

Makoko, the  riverine community sandwiched between Yaba and the 3rd Mainland  bridge is on fire. Oko-Baba Makoko, the area on fire, is on the left side of the bridge as one heads from the island to the mainland.

Commuters on their way home are massed on the 3rd Mainland bridge watching as the conflagration slowly eats up the shacks with hungry tongues of flame.

And the irony is seeing shacks built on water burning slowly without water to put the fire out.
