The MTV Africa Music Awards has gained a well deserved reputation as the biggest music stage for African artistes. After seven years of promoting music and encouraging collaborations between African artists – bringing the continent close together through music – MAMA has grown to be more than just the music.
Speaking at a press event on Friday in Lagos, Alex Okosi, Senior VP & Managing Director of MTV Networks Africa, said, “The MAMAs is bigger than music. We celebrate young people that are doing amazing things across Africa through our leadership award which is something I think we’re doing that’s powerful. It’s not about some young person that’s rich, it’s about young people that are being youth leaders on the continent. It’s important that we celebrate these people.”
One of the non-music categories, the MTV Base Leadership Award was won in 2014 by 33-year-old entrepreneur Ashish J. Thakkar.
MAMA also organizes a yearly music industry workshop for young students. “They sit for a day-long seminar where they listen to the best experts from across Africa and also internationally.”
The MTV Africa Music Awards will take place on July 18th, 2015 in Durban, South Africa.
