Marco Rubio has suspended his campaign after suffering a crushing and humiliating defeat to Donald Trump in his home state. It marked the end of a high-wire race for the Florida senator who was once pegged the most likely candidate to become the Republican nominee.
In a soaring and emotional concession speech Mr Rubio said he was bowing out because this was not the year for a campaign run on “hope”.
“After tonight, it is clear that while we are on the right side, this year we will not be on the winning side,” Mr Rubio told supporters.
He attacked Mr Trump as for taking the “easy route” by playing on people’s concerns about the American economy. “The easiest thing in this campaign is to jump on all those anxieties,” he said. “But I chose a different route. In a year like this that would have been the easiest way to win.” Read more
