A medical expert, Professor Peter Katchy, has advised the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), the Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON) as well as other regulatory bodies to be more proactive in regulating the use of sugar and other sweeteners in the production of edible goods that appeal mostly to children.
He made the call on the occasion of this year’s World Diabetes Day. He listed beverages, biscuits, candies and other snacks among the edibles, which he urged parents to regulate including their families’ sugar in-take to save children from the risk of diabetes.
Prof Katchy noted that in the past 10 years, Nigerian markets have continued to be flooded with sugar-based drinks and other products made with sweeteners in various colours and flavours that appeal to children. Read more
